Back in July, The Odyssey became a record-breaking box office sensation around the world. But before screenings started, audiences bore witness to the first trailer for Other Mommy, a horror movie starring Jessica Chastain. The unexpected scares got people buzzing, setting it up as one of the genre’s most anticipated releases of the year. Other Mommy is finally here, marking director Rob Savage’s follow up to 2023’s The Boogeyman. It is also Chastain’s first soiree into the genre since her role in 2019’s It Chapter Two. Here’s how Other Mommy is scoring on Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, Metacritic, Letterboxd and more.

Other Mommy Average Rating Across Major Review Sites

After combining Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, Metacritic, and Letterboxd scores, Other Mommy currently holds an average rating of 42 out of 100 across major review platforms. Looking at other horror movies from 2026, Other Mommy falls well short of critical darlings like Obsession and Backrooms. It is right alongside Primate‘s IMDB user rating, but lagging behind with critics. Its reviews are much more similar to Scream 7 and The Strangers: Chapter 3, which scored 30% and 19% on the Tomatometer, respectively. Psycho Killer is one of the only wide-release horror films to perform worse on Rotten Tomatoes with its 9% critics score.

The average rating was calculated by converting all available scores to a 100-point scale and averaging the results.

What the Reviews Say About Other Mommy

There was no shortage of negative reviews that dropped when Other Mommy‘s embargo lifted. Richard Lawson of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that it is “an attractive but mostly vacuous collection of jumpy bits and half-baked mythology.” As for Variety‘s Siddhant Adlakha, he said Other Mommy was “among the most limp and ineffectual works to grace the screen this year, misfiring in every direction, including and especially its tone.” The Daily Beast‘s Nick Schager was a little more forgiving, writing that “its unbridled rollercoaster momentum and hallucinatory haunted-house energy make it a thriller fit for a Friday night out at the multiplex with friends.” And although IGN‘s Carlos Morales submitted a rotten review on the whole due to the film’s lack of originality and dramatic success, he did admit that “Jessica Chastain is great in the lead role and there are a few effective jump scares.”

Rotten Tomatoes critics have Other Mommy sitting at 19% on the Tomatometer, even though the average score is at 4.5 out of 10. Its 39% score on Metacritic is labeled as “Generally Unfavorable”
