Kyle Monangai’s potential Week 4 upside

The Chicago Bears are hosting the Jets on Sunday afternoon of Week 4, but both sides could be without key pieces in their offense. D’Andre Swift missed Thursday’s practice due to a knee injury. The veteran 27-year-old running back was on the injury report with a knee issue earlier in the season as well, so it’s definitely possible this is just a rest day. However, it will be important to watch on Friday if Swift can get back to practice or if he has a real chance of missing Week 4.

If Swift is out, Monangai could be set for a huge increase in workload. The second-year back from Rutgers played 43% of snaps in Week 1 and racked up 23.4 FPTS. He was in a smaller role in each of the last two weeks, playing just 34% of snaps in Week 2 and 31% of snaps in Week 3. He did get 10 carries in each of those games, though, totaling 47 and 31 rushing yards against the Vikings and Eagles, respectively.

Last year, Swift missed one regular-season game, and in that contest, Monangai played 74% of the snaps in Week 9 against the Bengals. He took 26 carries for 176 rushing yards with three catches for 22 yards as well. He didn’t get into the end zone, but the immense workload shows how heavily the Bears are willing to rely on him if Swift is out.

The Jets are a favorable matchup for whichever running back gets the work, since they allowed four running back touchdowns in the last two weeks and have allowed a total of 109.3 rushing and receiving yards per game to the position through the first three games of the season.

Monangai would be a very solid RB2 if Swift is ruled out this week, and he becomes a flex play with increased upside even if Swift can play through his knee issue. The Bears could play from ahead against the Jets, and if so, it could be a very busy week for the backfield, giving Monangai good upside and value in season-long leagues as well as in DFS contests like the NFL $2.75M Fantasy Football Millionaire [$1M to 1st], where he has a $4,900 salary and would be an extreme value if in a starting role.
