National League foes are set to meet tonight in San Diego. The Cubs and Padres were separated by just two games in the standings this season, despite playing very different brands of baseball. The former preferred slugging its way to wins, whereas the latter utilized one of the league’s premier pitching staffs. In this showdown between polar opposites, which players are poised to step up?
The Padres are favorites (-131) over the Cubs on DraftKings Sportsbook. Let’s break down two player props worth consideration ahead of Tuesday’s Game 1 matchup.
Cubs vs. Padres Best Prop Bets Tonight for Tuesday 9/29/26
Seiya Suzuki 1+ base on balls (+127)
San Diego’s Michael King might be the most underrated starting pitcher in baseball. This season, he’s notched an impressive 3.21 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Those numbers are even better when pitching inside the pitcher friendly confines of Petco Park. With that being said, the veteran does have a few weaknesses. Most notable might be his penchant for handing out free passes. King only ranks within the 37th percentile in walk rate (8.2%). The veteran has allowed three or more walks in 12 of his appearances so far.
If anyone is poised to exploit King’s inconsistent command, it’s Seiya Suzuki. The Japanese slugger has enjoyed another terrific season with the Cubs. Through 143 games, he’s slashing .270/.368/.473 with 26 homers and 86 RBIs. Despite being a threat to go deep, the outfielder is also one of the sport’s best at working a count. He sits within the 91st percentile in walk rate (12.8%). To boot, he’s taken his base in 13 of his previous 24 appearances this season. At plus money, I’m willing to bet the fifth-year pro finds a way to get on base tonight.
Fernando Tatis Jr. 2+ base hits (+177)
This Padres offense is heating up, leading the league in wRC+ during September (127 wRC+). No player on the roster has been better than Fernando Tatis Jr.; he’s slashing .337/.413/.652 during that time. It wasn’t a great start for the outfielder, who underwent an uncharacteristic power outage during the first half. However, he managed to crush 20 home runs with a .610 slugging percentage over 64 games during the second half. It helps that his San Diego teammates are finally providing adequate lineup protection in recent weeks.
It’s not as if this is the most difficult pitching matchup. Granted, Matthew Boyd is no slouch on the mound. He’s delivered a respectable 3.91 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 22 starts this season. However, it’s also fair to say the veteran has gotten somewhat lucky. Boyd sits within the 25th percentile or lower in xERA (4.66), xBA (.264), fastball velocity (92.8 MPH) and strikeout rate (18.3%). Right-handed batters are slugging .407 against the southpaw this season, compared to just .265 for left-handed hitters. On the flip side, Tatis Jr. is slashing .309/.404/.583 against lefties. It wouldn’t be a shock to see Tatis Jr. make his mark this evening at home.
