California Golden Bears vs. Syracuse Orange pick, prediction for College Football Week 2 on Saturday 9/12/26

Cal (0-1) got off to a rocky start, losing 45-24 against UCLA in Week 1. It was a different story for Syracuse (1-0), who enjoyed a 66-3 beatdown over New Hampshire. The Orange will get their first Power 4 test of the season, a home game against a sneaky-good Golden Bears offense. What kind of game should we expect this afternoon in upstate New York?

The Orange are listed as 3.5-point favorites over the Golden Bears, with the total set at O/U 56.5 points. Below is my full preview, prediction and best bet for Saturday’s Cal vs. Syracuse Week 2 matchup.

Cal vs. Syracuse prediction, preview

It’s fair to say the vibes are a bit down in Berkeley at the moment. Losing to an in-state rival is never easy, especially when it’s a 21-point loss at home. Now, the Golden Bears have to travel across the country to take on an in-conference foe. With that being said, there’s hope for this group. That’s due to the presence of Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, a quarterback with an NFL-caliber arm. Last Saturday’s performance wasn’t the sophomore at his best. He threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns, but also coughed up two interceptions against the Bruins.

First-year head coach Tosh Lupoi has surrounded Sagapolutele with a decent supporting cast. Rutgers transfer Ian Strong was terrific during his team debut, snagging five catches for 94 yards. Returning tight end Mason Mini made an impact as well, securing four receptions and a touchdown. However, the headliner was Washington transfer Adam Mohammed. The running back churned out 120 yards and a touchdown on the ground while hauling in seven catches for 46 more yards. Having a legitimate presence out of the backfield could transform Cal’s offense into one of the ACC’s best. Last season, the Golden Bears showed tepid interest at best in establishing the run game.

Defense is the Achilles heel for Cal, as seen during last week’s meltdown. UCLA made its biggest impact on the ground, gaining a whopping 277 rushing yards on 31 carries (8.9 YPC). Some positive regression is inevitable, but it’s clear that this group needs to get tougher up front. If there’s a silver lining, the secondary held up quite well against the Bruins. Star quarterback Nico Iamaleava threw for 184 yards and an interception, completing just 63.6% of his passes. The defensive backs will need to be just as stingy today against another quality passer.

Speaking of which, Steve Angeli is back. After suffering a season-ending torn Achilles in 2025, Syracuse’s offense went down the drain. As evidenced by last week’s fireworks, this is a whole different team with #9 under center. During his brief four-game stretch last season, the now-senior threw for 1,317 yards and ten touchdowns (two interceptions). He managed to find the end zone three different times against New Hampshire. The gunslinger has plenty of weapons to choose from inside the Carrier Dome. Sixth-year senior Umari Hatcher looks like a problem; he kicked off the season with an eight-catch, 147-yard, two-touchdown masterpiece. Shavane Anderson Jr. and Tylik Hill combined for 193 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground, with the former scoring three. The injury status of freshman wideout Calvin Russell III will be something to monitor before kickoff.

In many ways, these two squads are quite similar. The biggest holdup for ‘Cuse is the defense, in spite of its early 2026 success. The coaching staff was aggressive in the transfer portal, but there aren’t many proven contributors on this roster. Even more worrying is the secondary. SU surrendered 7.8 yards per pass attempt to opponents last season, ninth-worst among all Power 4 programs. Some improvement is likely, but that’s because there’s nowhere to go but up. This remains a relatively uninspiring group of defensive backs, a daunting prospect when facing JKS.

Best Bet: Cal +3.5 (-110)

It’s easy to forget now, but Cal was tied heading into the fourth quarter vs. UCLA. A disastrous final frame diminishes that to a degree, but last week’s final score doesn’t reflect what was a close game. Syracuse entered the 2026 season with middling expectations, but a blowout over New Hampshire has shifted them to home favorites. 64% of all bets are backing the Orange moneyline, making this a prime spot to fade the public. Back a more talented Golden Bears offense on the road this afternoon.
