Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers prediction, pick for Tuesday 8/25/26

Updated:

By: Griffin Wong

Fortunes change quickly in baseball. The Detroit Tigers traded Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize at the start of the month, went on a run of eight wins in 10 games to keep themselves afloat in the playoff picture, and have since lost nine of 10 to sink right back out of it.

They lost their series opener last night to the Tampa Bay Rays, who have been the AL’s juggernaut all season, and it won’t get any easier moving forward, as they’ll face the back-to-back World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend.

Tonight’s middle game will begin at 6:40 p.m. ET. Casey Legumina will open ahead of Ian Seymour for the Rays, and Jackson Jobe will start for the Tigers.

Let’s break down this interdivisional clash with some odds and lines at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers Best Bets

  • Tampa Bay Rays Moneyline (-125): There’s no area of the game in which Detroit has been better than Tampa Bay since the trade deadline, and while Seymour isn’t an ace, he’s a more reliable option than Jobe, who wasn’t great in 2025 and is coming off of Tommy John surgery.
  • Detroit Tigers U1.5 Runs 1st 5 Innings (+105): Legumina has been consistently solid as an opener, sporting a 2.25 ERA in such situations, and while Seymour tends to settle into the game both as a starter and a reliever, he usually comes out hotter as a reliever.

Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers prediction, preview

Tampa Bay finally hit a rough patch, losing six of eight games before bouncing back with a pair of wins. As a result, its chances of winning the AL East dropped from 85.3% to just 70.0%, with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox continuing to close the gap. In general, though, the Rays have kept on humming, as they posted a .735 OPS before the All-Star break and a .734 mark ever since, both top-10 figures in the league. They solved their biggest position of need at the trade deadline by adding catcher Liam Hicks, and Junior Caminero will likely better his ninth-place MVP finish from last season. Additionally, while Tampa Bay’s bullpen has slipped slightly in August and trade deadline acquisition Freddy Peralta has been quite poor, it’s still been among the best pitching teams in baseball all season. Three starters (Nick Martinez, Drew Rasmussen, and Shane McClanahan) have an ERA of 3.10 or better, and relievers Kevin Kelly and Bryan Baker have been among baseball’s best. The Rays have gotten fairly lucky — their record is eight games better than expected given their run differential — but given that they’ve maintained this clutch standard across the entire season, it’s certainly sustainable.

Detroit had been hot. On June 28, the Tigers were just 35-49, but they clawed their way back to nearly .500, climbing to 60-61 on August 13 before falling back. Since the Midsummer Classic, Detroit has actually had a better offense than Tampa Bay, as shortstop Kevin McGonigle is a shoo-in for AL Rookie of the Year and catcher Dillon Dingler has been his position’s best. Additionally, the Tigers have had a top-10 pitching staff since the All-Star break, and even in August, since trading Skubal and Mize, they rank 11th. Troy Melton has stepped into Skubal’s ace role nicely, recording a 1.60 ERA in 15 starts, and their bullpen has been solid if unspectacular, as every reliever with at least 30 innings pitched has an ERA+ north of 100. Run differential obviously isn’t everything, but Detroit has been the polar opposite of the Rays; its record is 12 games worse than its run differential would indicate. It’s just 12-22 in one-run games, as veteran closer Kenley Jansen has started to show some signs of his age.

I’d expect Legumina to pitch a clean inning or two before turning it over to Seymour, given that he has given up just two runs in eight innings across his five starts this season. Seymour has been a reliever for most of the season, but he first entered a bulk role on June 8 and has been sharp, pitching to a 3.71 ERA across 11 starts and three long relief appearances. In fact, he’s given up three or fewer earned runs in all but one of his outings over that span. Advanced numbers paint a pretty positive picture of him, as his 3.70 expected ERA is in line with his numbers as a starter, and his .222 xBA is a 72nd-percentile figure. In particular, Seymour has excellent strikeout stuff, ranking in the top quintile in chase rate, whiff rate, and strikeout rate, and the Tigers have some of the best bat-to-ball skills in the league, so he’s well-suited to mitigate their biggest strength. He also has a better-than-average walk rate, and Detroit’s disciplined plate approach means it ranks ninth in the league in walks. Seymour just hasn’t been great at inducing ground balls, ranking in the eighth percentile in that stat and the 10th in barrel rate, which could be a problem against the Tigers, who have hit grounders at the league’s lowest rate and rank ninth in barrel rate despite having the ninth-lowest average exit velocity. The splits are mixed; although his ERA is nearly a run higher on the road, Detroit has performed similarly whether at home or on the road, and it hasn’t been as effective against lefties.

Jobe recorded a 4.22 ERA in his first 10 career starts last spring before undergoing Tommy John surgery, and after five successful MiLB rehab starts, he’s posted a 4.50 mark through his first three outings of 2026, with two strong starts surrounding a stinker against the Chicago White Sox. He hasn’t pitched nearly enough to qualify for leaderboards, but last season, his 4.90 xERA ranked in the 14th percentile. The 2021 third overall pick had shoddy command last season, ranking in the bottom quintile in both strikeout rate and walk rate, which could be a problem against baseball’s best contact-hitting team, but his control has seemingly improved so far in 2026. Additionally, he’s been solid at limiting hard contact, but that shouldn’t be much of a problem against Tampa Bay, which ranks in the bottom four in all three slugging-related Statcast categories. His ground-ball rate would rank in the league’s top decile if he’d pitched enough innings to qualify, exacerbating one of the Rays’ biggest weaknesses. Jobe’s home-road splits are negligible, but Tampa Bay has been less effective away from home.

Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers pick, best bet

Best Bet: Tampa Bay Rays Moneyline (-125)

These are pretty friendly odds for the American League’s best team to continue its winning ways, especially since the Tigers have gone ice-cold as of late. Jobe has potential, but for now, Seymour is the better pitcher.

Strong Lean: Detroit Tigers U1.5 Runs 1st 5 Innings (+105)

Legumina should be good to keep Detroit off the board for two innings, and while Seymour has been poor the first time through the lineup as a starter, he’s been better in such situations in relief.
