The 2026 summer movie season is in full swing, to the point where certain blockbusters are going head-to-head on their opening weekends. Masters of the Universe and Scary Movie both hit theaters on June 5, injecting new life into the box office lineup that already boasted Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and a pair of horror hits in Obsession and Backrooms. So which flick took the top spot – the modern reimagining of He-Man or Anna Faris, Regina Hall and the Wayans brothers’ return to their horror movie parody franchise?

Here is a breakdown of how Masters of the Universe performed at the box office this past weekend:

Masters of the Universe Box Office

Masters of the Universe made $29.3 million at the box office between June 5 and June 7. For comparison, the original Masters of the Universe opened to $4.9 million in August 1987. Adjusted for inflation, that is equal to roughly $14.3 million today. It wound up grossing $17.3 million – $50.4 million adjusted for inflation – during its three-week theatrical run.

According to Deadline and Variety, Masters of the Universe made $4.4 million in Thursday night previews on June 4. That cash is counted as part of the film’s $11.75 million Friday gross. Masters of the Universe now owns the No. 12 domestic opening weekend of 2026 so far, trailing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, Backrooms, Project Hail Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Scream 7, Hoppers, Scary Movie, Mortal Kombat II and Wuthering Heights.

Looking beyond the United States and Canada, Masters of the Universe reeled in an additional $25 million overseas. In total, the film grossed $54.3 million worldwide over its opening weekend. The 1987 Masters of the Universe did not get a particularly robust global release, with Box Office Mojo and The Numbers crediting the film with just over $300 total from international markets.
