Clearly, nothing is guaranteed at the World Cup. With just 12 minutes remaining in regular time in Tuesday’s earlier Round of 16 matchup between Argentina and Egypt, the Pharaohs were two goals up on the Albiceleste and on the verge of sending the 2022 champions home early, but Argentina made one of the most improbable comebacks in World Cup history to secure its place in the next round. In the final matchup of the Round of 16, which will begin at 4 p.m. ET, neither Colombia nor Switzerland can feel assured in victory until the final whistle has blown.
The winner will face the Albiceleste in the quarterfinals. Advancement to that stage would be Los Cafeteros’ best since they also reached the quarterfinals in 2014, while it would be Nati’s best since 1954, when they fell to Austria in a 7-5 thriller in the last eight.

115′: HOW DID JAMINTON CAMPAZ MISS THAT? GRANIT XHAKA MADE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE TO GIVE CAMPAZ A GREAT CHANCE FROM THE CORNER OF THE SIX-YARD BOX! BUT HE SENT IT OVER THE BAR WITH HIS LEFT FOOT! THAT WAS BY FAR LOS CAFETEROS’ BEST CHANCE OF THE MATCH BY EXPECTED GOALS!
114′: Xhaka had an opportunity from the top of the 18-yard box, but he sent it over the crossbar! Was that the last good chance of the game for Switzerland?
112′: Díaz looked determined as he took a throw-in quickly, got it back, and sent across a nice switch to Quintero, but his left-footed shot from outside the box sailed well over the bar.
110′: Los Cafeteros have continued to look like the better side so far in this second half of extra time, but 10 minutes isn’t much to find a winner.
106′: We’re back for the second half of extra time! Will either team be able to avoid penalties in the final 15 minutes, or will both teams be playing for spot kicks?
HT (105′): Nati managed to defend one final Colombia corner, keeping the score level headed into the final 15 minutes! -245 odds of penalties!
105′: And now Miro Muheim has received a yellow card for a foul on Jaminton Campaz. This has been an ugly, scrappy match with a ton of physicality.

103′: Both teams get one additional substitution in extra time, so now Rieder has come off and Zeki Amdouni has come on.
101′: Jaminton Campaz tried a long one, and that was an excellent effort! It was brilliantly hit by Campaz, and Kobel managed to get both of his forearms to it at the near post!
100′: Los Cafeteros followed that strong effort with a terrible shot from Richard Ríos, who tried one from approximately 40 yards out against one of the best goalkeepers on the planet.
99′: What a chance there for Colombia! Jhon Lucumí hit the bar from point-blank range with a header after a cross!
95′: Another card, this time for Davinson Sánchez after a foul on Cedric Itten.
94′: Campaz had gone down in the box and appealed for a penalty, but the VAR opted not to take a look at it! That could’ve been Los Cafeteros’ opportunity to win this match!
93′: We’re still a little bit away from penalties, but for some context, Nati lost their last penalty shootout, 5-3, in the Euro 2024 Round of 16 against England. Colombia lost its last penalty shootout in the 2019 Copa América, 5-4, to Chile.
91′: We’re underway for the first half of extra time! It’s the sixth extra time game of the tournament, and there have been three penalty shootouts from the first five!
FT (90′): AND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE ROUND OF 16, THERE WILL BE EXTRA TIME! IT WAS A SLOW 90 MINUTES, WITH BOTH TEAMS COMBINING FOR 0.7 EXPECTED GOALS AND GETTING ONLY FOUR OF THEIR COMBINED 13 SHOTS ON TARGET! COLOMBIA IS -140 TO ADVANCE, AND SWITZERLAND IS +110!
90’+2: Ndoye’s night is done, as Rubén Vargas has replaced him. Vargas had been injured in training, but he’ll play the last few minutes of this match (and extra time, if need be).
90’+1: DAN NDOYE MADE A GREAT RUN AND SLID IT ACROSS THE FACE OF GOAL, BUT NOBODY WAS AT THE BACK POST! THAT COULD’VE BEEN THE CHANCE FOR SWITZERLAND!
90′: -450 odds of going into extra time at this point! Will there be a surprise in added time?
89′: Luis Díaz swung a cross in towards the back post, where Daniel Muñoz and Jaminton Campaz were, and Campaz slipped! He appealed for a penalty, but it wasn’t given!
86′: Nati are now making two changes; Breel Embolo is done for Cedric Itten, and Denis Zakaria has been taken off for Silvan Widmer. Zakaria has had a fine evening against Díaz, keeping Los Cafeteros’ danger man relatively quiet.
84′: What an audacious effort by Quintero, trying a first-time through ball! It didn’t find Jaminton Campaz, who was offsides anyway, but that sort of creativity is why Quintero is one of Colombia’s preferred subs.
82′: Los Cafeteros have made two more changes, as Luis Suárez and Jefferson Lerma are done. Cucho Hernández and Richard Ríos have entered the match, looking to spark a late winner.
79′: Denis Zakaria had an opportunity to cross it in to Breel Embolo, who had snuck in by the back post while marked by Daniel Muñoz, but he slipped and couldn’t get his head to the ball! Just 10 minutes left for either team to find a winner (although, to be fair, Switzerland scored four in the final 15 minutes against Bosnia and Herzegovina).
75′: Jefferson Lerma just passed it straight beyond the touchline, nowhere near any of his teammates, which isn’t a big mistake on its own but is emblematic of how difficult it has been for Colombia’s normally effective attack to get anything going today.
74′: Thankfully, both Embolo and Vargas are now up, and both will continue.
72′: Eek, a bad collision between Camilo Vargas’ chest and Breel Embolo’s head, as well as some knee-to-back contact. Embolo is okay, while Vargas is still down.
71′: Nati are making their second change of the match after the hydration break, as Ricardo Rodríguez has come off and Miro Muheim is coming on. Muheim scored an own goal against Qatar in his only prior substitute appearance at this tournament.
68′: It’s now time for the hydration break! There are -135 odds now that the match will go to extra time, though Colombia remains a slight favorite overall.
66′: And now, Los Cafeteros have made a couple of changes, seeking an offensive spark. James Rodríguez is done for the night, as is Jhon Arias, and Jaminton Campaz and Juan Fernando Quintero are on. Could this be the last we see of Rodríguez in his World Cup career?
63′: LUIS SUÁREZ, WHAT WAS THAT? He had a good look at the top of the box, but he completely shanked it wide right, and it never got anywhere near the target! A disastrous effort for the Sporting CP man!
60′: Luis Díaz with some excellent touches in the box and turned to get a decent look on goal, but it was a bouncer and didn’t challenge Kobel all that much! That was Díaz’s first shot on target this match. In the aftermath, Luis Javier Suárez received a yellow for interfering with Kobel as he was trying to start Switzerland’s possession.
59′: Now, Denis Zakaria has received a yellow card after bringing down Luis Díaz! Yellow cards are wiped after the quarterfinal, so he’ll be suspended for the semifinal if he picks up another card in Switzerland’s next match.
58′: Over the last few minutes, Gregor Kobel has already had to come out of his box to handle it twice, and he’s been up for the task both times.
53′: After a free kick from the left corner of the 18-yard box, Fabian Rieder couldn’t quite curl his effort in, but it’s emblematic of the much more up-tempo start that Nati have had to this second half!
51′: That could’ve been a good look for Los Cafeteros after James Rodríguez crossed it in, but it was just a little bit too high for his intended target! Meanwhile, Granit Xhaka received a yellow card for an earlier challenge on Daniel Muñoz in which he’d stepped on the Colombian defender’s ankle, the first booking of the match.
49′: Dan Ndoye went down in the box, but the referee didn’t call for a penalty! Daniel Muñoz had made some light contact with the back of his shirt! There will not be a VAR check.
48′: Woah, that was a great chance for Switzerland! Dan Ndoye beat Mojica and centered it, but Djibril Sow slipped right as he was about to make contact, and he sent his left-footed shot from the penalty spot well over the bar!
46′: We’re back after halftime, and Switzerland has made one change: Ardon Jashari, who’d started in place of Johan Manzambi but had a pretty quiet performance, is now off, and Djibril Sow is on!
HT: And that’s it in a slow first half in Vancouver! In the first half, Los Cafeteros produced five shots worth 0.25 expected goals, and Nati managed to put both of its shots (worth a combined 0.06 expected goals) on target! A draw is now the single most likely outcome at +130. Wouldn’t it be fitting if the final Round of 16 match was the first one of the round to require a penalty shootout (or even extra time, for that matter)?
42′: A sloppy touch by Granit Xhaka led to won of the better opportunities of the match so far for Colombia, and it was eventually recycled into a corner! It didn’t turn into anything, but it highlights just how dangerous this Colombia defense can be when it’s firing.
39′: James Rodríguez, Colombia’s hero in the 2014 World Cup, won a tackle to create a chance in a dangerous era! Los Cafeteros’ career cap leader hasn’t had a great tournament, but these sorts of plays explain why he’s still in the lineup.
35′: That was a footrace down the left flank between two of the fastest players on either team, Dan Ndoye for Nati and Jefferson Lerma for Los Cafeteros, and Lerma won it to force a tackle and end the danger!
33′: That was a great block by Nico Elvedi to deny Colombia’s danger man, Luis Díaz, from the left side of the 18-yard box! Díaz had made a nice move in traffic, but he couldn’t poke it past Elvedi with his weaker right foot.
32′: That was basically the same shot there from a similar spot on the left side of the 18-yard box, but Dan Ndoye couldn’t get enough power on the shot to get it past Vargas!
30′: Switzerland got a great shot on target through Fabian Rieder, but Camilo Vargas was there to deny him! Vargas, who plays domestically for Atlas in Liga MX, hasn’t had a ton to do this tournament, but he’s been good when called upon!
29′: Nati have looked better after the hydration break, putting consistent pressure on Los Cafeteros’ end of the field. They still haven’t turned any of that pressure into a shot, but there’s a few minutes of promising build-up play.
23′: It’s now the hydration break, and not much has changed! Colombia has attempted two shots worth 0.1 expected goals to Switzerland’s zero, and there are now +160 odds of extra time.
21′: That was a great chance for Los Cafeteros! After a series of nifty passes, Gustavo Puerta attempted a rocket from the edge of the 18-yard box to Gregor Kobel’s left, and the Borussia Dortmund man got both gloves on it to push it out of play!
18′: Still a pretty slow match from both teams to this point, but Los Cafeteros have been the slightly better side so far. That was a poor pass by Swiss captain Granit Xhaka, as he just kicked it straight out of play to give Colombia possession.
13′: Díaz won a foul on the right flank after a good ball by Jefferson Lerma! It’ll be an indirect free kick for James Rodríguez.
9′: So far, Nati have had more possession, but Los Cafeteros have created the only corner. Those set pieces could be critical in this game; Colombia has been slightly better than Switzerland in such situations on both sides of the ball.
6′: Switzerland just attempted its first shot of this match, a bouncer to into Camilo Vargas’ arms. At least, that’s how it looked, but Dan Ndoye was offsides.
5′: That was a good start for Colombia, as Jhon Arias made a run down the right sideline and centered it towards Luis Díaz to win a corner.
1′: We’re underway in Vancouver for the final game of the tournament outside the United States! Switzerland is dealing with two major injuries: Johan Manzambi and Rubén Vargas are both absent from the starting lineup, with the 20-year-old Manzambi suffering a knee injury in practice.
