All four matches so far in the new World Cup Round of 32 have been full of drama. Canada and Brazil both took until stoppage time to finally find winners against South Africa and Japan, and Paraguay and Morocco both needed penalties to eliminate Germany and the Netherlands, respectively.
It wouldn’t be surprising to get more drama in today’s earliest matchup, between Ivory Coast and Norway. The winner will go on to face the Seleçao in the Round of 16. On paper, it’s one of the most evenly-matched games of this tournament, as the Red, White, and Blue sport a brilliant attack and the Elephants an airtight defense.

90’+6: TREMENDOUS STRIKE FROM AMAD DIALLO TO THE TOP RIGHT CORNER, AND ØRJAN NYLAND JUST GOT A HAND TO IT TO DENY WHAT WOULD’VE BEEN ONE OF THE BEST EQUALIZERS OF THE TOURNAMENT!
90’+5: This game is getting chippy now. Ibrahim Sangaré has earned a foul near the top of the box after Martin Ødegaard pushed him. This could be one of the final chances of the match for the Elephants!
90’+2: A whistle blew after Yan Diomandé fell in the cross, but it wasn’t a penalty, as Ivorian fans hoped. Now, Diomandé has come off for Evann Guessand and Ghislain Konan has come off for Bazoumana Touré. Diomandé and Konan were tremendous tonight, but their efforts look like they’ll be in vain.
90′: Haaland had made a run into the box, but some great defending by Ivory Coast held him off! Now, the Elephants have seven minutes to keep their tournament alive.
86′: WAS IT EVER IN DOUBT!? ERLING. BRAUT. HAALAND. HAALAND JUST PUT NORWAY AHEAD AFTER AN EXCELLENT PASS FROM PATRICK BERG FOUND HIS MASTERFUL LEFT FOOT NEAR THE TOP OF THE SIX-YARD BOX, AND HE TAPPED IT JUST PAST A DIVING YAHIA FOFANA, WHO WAS OUT OF POSITION. NORWAY 2, IVORY COAST 1, AND NOW THE EUROPEAN SIDE HAS WRESTED ALL THE MOMENTUM BACK!
83′: Now, Norway has made a change, as Fredrik Aursnes has entered the game in place of Marcus Pedersen, who’s struggled with Yan Diomandé today in place of the injured Julian Ryerson.
77′: The tempo of this game has really picked up! Norway has started to pick up the attacking aggression now with the hopes of finding a winner in the last 15 minutes.
74′: AND THERE HE IS!! AMAD DIALLO WITH THE BRILLIANT GIVE-AND-GO WITH GUELA DOUÉ ALONG THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE 18-YARD BOX, AND HE CUT INSIDE TO FINISH WITH HIS LEFT FOOT! IVORY COAST AND NORWAY ARE LEVEL! WHAT A GAME THIS IS, AND WHAT A PLAYER AMAD DIALLO IS! THE ELEPHANTS HAVE FINALLY BROKEN THROUGH!
71′: That’ll do it for Nusa, as he and Alexander Sørloth have exited the game and Oscar Bobb and Andreas Schjelderup have entered. Will they be able to help Norway hold its lead?
68′: At the second half hydration break, Ivory Coast has now had more possession and taken more total shots, but three of them have been bad looks outside the box. Just 22 minutes remain if it wants to join fellow continental giants Morocco in the Round of 16. A goal from either team feels inevitable at this point!
67′: AN EVEN BETTER BLOCK BY AN ATTACKING PLAYER, AS AMAD DIALLO JUST KEPT HIS COUNTRY’S CHANES ALIVE!
64′: Two excellent clearances from Erling Haaland! Who said he’s not a defensive monster?
60′: Perhaps not surprisingly, the night is over for Ange-Yoan Bonny and Christ Oulaï, who have wasted plenty of opportunities today. Amad Diallo will now add even more pace to the Elephants’ winger options, and Elye Wahi will provide a new look in place of Bonny.
57′: That’s a free kick in a very dangerous position for Norway right near the edge of the 18-yard box! The Elephants have been very disciplined, committing just two fouls, but Sangaré’s foul on Martin Ødegaard was a big mistake.
55′: That was the best chance of the match so far for Ivory Coast! A deflection came to Nicolas Pépé on the right side of the six-yard box, and he fired one with his left foot at the near post. Nyland just about got enough to keep it out and protect Norway’s lead! He hasn’t been good this tournament, but that was a huge save.
50′: The Elephants wasted yet another corner, their 10th of the match. They’ve had most of the ball so far this second half, but they haven’t yet turned their possessional dominance into a shot on target.
46′: We’re back underway! Can Norway hold on, or can Ivory Coast turn their chances into a goal? It’s all still to play for!
HT: That’s halftime! Norway will enter the half with a lead! In the first half, the Red, White, and Blue produced 0.66 xG worth of chances, and the Elephants produced 0.44. What does the second half of this match have in store?
45’+3: There was no penalty, and while the Elephants earned a free kick in dangerous position after Antonio Nusa received a yellow card, it didn’t turn into anything, as Sangaré’s header missed wide of the mark. Ivory Coast has had enough chances to have equalized by now, but its struggles from set pieces have continued into this match and could send it home.
45’+1: Ivory Coast protested for a penalty after Sangaré went down inside the box! The VAR will check.
42′: And breathe, Elephants fans! Haaland had a good look from point-blank range, and only an excellent block by Ibrahim Sangaré kept it out! Norway is starting to look better, and Ivory Coast is trailing for the first time this tournament (Germany’s winner came with just a few minutes remaining).
39′: OH MY, WHAT A GOAL OUT OF NOWHERE! ANTONIO NUSA DECIDED TO JUST TAKE ON IVORY COAST’S DEFENSE ALL BY HIMSELF, AND HIS TREMENDOUS RIGHT-FOOTED STRIKE FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BOX CURLED PAST FOFANA’S OUTSTRETCHED HAND AND INTO THE SIDE OF THE NET. NORWAY 1, IVORY COAST 0. AS OF RIGHT NOW, THE RED, WHITE, AND BLUE ARE ON TRACK TO FACE BRAZIL.
37′: And that was Erling Haaland’s first shot on target of the game, after a cross from Alexander Sørloth! Haaland rose the highest and headed it straight at net from near the penalty spot, but it bounced right to Yahia Fofana, who didn’t have much of a challenge with it.
35′: I guess that was technically a shot on goal for Emmanuel Agbadou from well outside the box after yet another corner (the seventh of this match for Ivory Coast), but he sort of popped it up, and it just floated right into Ørjan Nyland’s arms. That was the first shot on goal of this match by either team.
32′: The Elephants had two corners in a row, but they’ve been the worst team from set pieces so far this tournament, and it’s shown in this match. Neither play turned into a serious threat on goal.
28′: Another major missed opportunity for the Ivory Coast! Diomandé sent a great cross towards the far post, and Nicolas Pépé sent it back towards the middle to try and find Ange-Yoan Bonny, but he and the Inter Milan youngster were on different pages. Tough game for Bonny so far.
24′: After a Norway corner, Ivory Coast was starting a counter, but David Møller Wolfe brought Diomandé down with a crunching collision. After a moment, Diomandé got up, and the referee blew for the hydration break. So far, the Elephants have produced 0.16 expected goals to the Red, White, and Blue’s 0.03. Norway has had the slight advantage in possession, though.
21′: 20 minutes into the match, Erling Haaland has touched the ball only once. Ghislain Konan absolutely deked Pederson out of his boots and fired a shot on goal, but it was from a difficult angle and found the side netting. Still 0-0, but the Elephants have looked better overall.
18′: Ivory Coast has been on the front foot for the last several minutes. The latest chance did not turn into anything, as a give-and-go found Nicolas Pépé a little too close to the end line, but the West African side is starting to settle into this game.
15′: This will be a battle to watch throughout the match, as Yan Diomandé and Marcus Holmgren Pedersen battled along the left sideline and the Ivorian earned a corner. Diomandé, a 19-year-old winger linked with both Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool, is one of the best dribblers on the planet, and Norway ranked third-to-last in ground duel win rate. The Elephants will need to pounce on that advantage today if they want to win!
11′: The crowd in Dallas rose in collective anticipation as Erling Haaland found space near the penalty spot, but Martin Ødegaard’s pass didn’t quite reach him. All 33.5 million Ivorians surely just breathed a collective sigh of relief! So far, Norway has had the majority of the ball, but no great chances yet for either team.
8′: That was a real opportunity missed for Ivory Coast! Guela Doué put in a great cross to the center of the box, and Yan Diomandé was in the right position to head it home, but he couldn’t get much on it. Still, this is the most aggressive attacking play the Elephants have had so far.
3′: There have been a few sloppy passes so far this game, but Norway got the first shot, as a cross found Erling Haaland in the center of the box! His weak header was cleared pretty quickly by Odilon Kossounou, but that’s a promising start for the Red, White, and Blue!
1′: And we have action in Dallas, as both Ivory Coast and Norway seek their first World Cup knockout victories ever! The Elephants start with possession and boot it deep to initiate the press. Some major lineup news for both teams: the Red, White, and Blue will be without Julian Ryerson because of injury, and Amad Diallo is sitting for Ivory Coast.
