The pitching matchup for tonight’s game is Tarik Skubal vs. Cam Schlittler. Skubal, the two-time Cy Young Award winner, has had a shaky start to the season after returning from an elbow injury. This season, Skubal is 3-4 with a 3.32 ERA through 10 outings. He recorded nine and eight strikeouts in his last two starts but allowed at least three runs in each. Skubal’s last start with fewer than two runs was on April 18.
Schlittler is in the midst of a breakout season, with a 1.62 ERA, 8-4 record, 118 strikeouts, and a 0.92 WHIP. He has the second-best ERA and is fourth in strikeouts and WHIP in the MLB. Schlittler’s last start didn’t go as planned, as he gave up four runs but had zero earned runs. Before that, Schlittler allowed one or fewer runs in three straight games.
Veteran Paul Goldschmidt is having a good season, batting .284 with 14 home runs and 41 RBIs. This season, Ben Rice has been impressive, as he is leading the Yankees in HRs (22) and RBIs (53). Riley Greene (.285) and Kevin McGonigle (.284) are leading the Tigers this season in batting average.

Even though the Yankees’ offense has been struggling, they still have a better team batting average (.238 vs. .236), more runs (412 vs. 351), and more home runs (122 vs. 95) than the Tigers this season. The Yankees are 3-2 in their previous five matchups with the Tigers. With Schlittler on the mound, it gives the Yankees the advantage over the Tigers since Skubal isn’t back at peak form yet.
