Just as it is throughout the fall, winter, and spring, June is hockey time in Canada, especially if one of its seven NHL teams makes a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. But this season, all Canadian teams fell short of the Stanley Cup Finals, and the Reds are about to make their first World Cup appearance on home soil.
At 3 p.m. ET in Toronto, striker Jonathan David will carry the hopes of a nation on his shoulders as Canada kicks off World Cup Group B action against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Juventus man will be the Reds’ centerpiece with left-back Alphonso Davies out with an injury.

FT: And that will be that! Canada has still not yet picked up a World Cup win, but at least it has a point. The Reds and the Dragons are tied with a point apiece, with Switzerland and Qatar to play tomorrow.
90’+5: CYLE LARIN ALMOST DID IT! What a block from Tarik Muharemović to deny Larin from close range!
90′: Canada has looked like the better team in the last 10 minutes, but still no real danger. A draw looks inevitable now.
79′: And Cyle Larin does it for the Reds; a GOAL for Canada! Just a few minutes after getting substituted on, the Southampton man takes a turn in the center of the box and sends it into the right side of the net, past Vasilj’s outstretched arms! That’s his 31st international goal, and a draw (+250) looks on unless either team can find a winner in the last 10 minutes and stoppage time!
61′: And that’ll do it for Jonathan David’s evening. He’s been substituted off for Jacob Shaffelburg with Canada trailing 1-0. A pretty quiet performance, all things considered, for the Juventus striker and New York City native.
56′: David got a touch along the right flank and tried to center it, but it was a poor pass, allowing Vasilj to collect. David’s touches just haven’t been clean enough this match.
52′: Very, very, very nearly a goal for Canada’s Richie Laryea, but Sead Kolasinac made an incredible goal line clearance to keep the score 1-0 and keep the Dragons in position for the upset! Luc de Fougerolles picked up a yellow in the aftermath.
49′: Major contact here between Oluwaseyi and Vasilj, and the medical teams are coming out. Oluwaseyi looks okay. No penalty given, and now Vasilj is up as well.
46′: And we’re back! Second half action is underway in Toronto. No changes for either Jesse Marsch or Sergej Barbarej. Can the Reds turn it around?
HT: Momentum is turning in the Reds’ favor, but it’s still Bosnia 1, Canada 0. David had some flashes, but he also missed a few opportunities to put his country ahead, with a sloppy touch in front of goal and a poor effort early on.
45’+1: Aaaaaand there’s another Yellow for Bosnia; this time, it’s Lukić, for bringing down Buchanan deep in Dragons territory. Scrappy game so far between these two sides as we near halftime.
45′: That’s a yellow now for the Dragons’ Demirović after he brought down Derek Cornelius. It’s slipping away from Bosnia here a little bit, as Canada has thoroughly dominated the last 20 minutes of action, but the Dragons still have the lead.
38′: Corner won by David! He goes for a bicycle kick off the corner, but doesn’t get much elevation, and it’s deflected immediately across the end line by a Bosnia defender. That’s the sixth corner of the game for the Reds, and it’s four shots (+180) for David!
37′: This is a great defensive performance from David, who recorded a tackle earlier and now just poked one across the sideline! It’s not his main responsibility, but if Canada’s going to make this comeback, it’ll need a two-way effort from every player on the roster.
29′: Canada is starting to control the pace now, as the corner leads to a shot from the left side of the box from David. That’s three shots (-135), but this one was immediately blocked.
28′: That’s a second shot for David! (-425). After a set piece, he finds the ball in the right side of the box, but there’s a lot of traffic, and it’s quickly blocked by a defender before getting anywhere near goal.
23′: The referee blows for the hydration break. Canada will need to improve in all facets of the game if it wants to take all three points in this one.
21′: Are we on upset alert here in Toronto? Bosnia scores from a corner, courtesy of Jovo Lukić, and the European side has a 1-0 lead! The Dragons (+370 ML) have their first World Cup goal since 2014, and Canada (-120 ML) is in trouble! It’s Lukić’s first international goal!
17′: Finally, David rockets a shot on target with a left-footed shot from the penalty spot! It’s not a great look, though, and Nikola Vasilj doesn’t have too much trouble with it with a dive to his right. David 1+ Shots (-2500) and 1+ Shots on Target (-235) hit. Jesse Marsch is livid.
14′: There we go; there’s some more action on the Reds’ end. David got a throw-in down the right sideline and whipped it into the middle towards Oluwaseyi, but it was deflected past the end line by a Bosnian defender. Canada’s subsequent corner leads nowhere.
11′: Alistair Johnston picks up a yellow card for the Reds, and it’s just been that kind of day for Canada so far. It’s been thoroughly out-played by Bosnia and Herzegovina (+370 ML), though the score remains level. David has barely had any touches, much less one in a dangerous position.
1′: We have action here in Toronto! Canada (-120 ML) starts with the possession in its first home World Cup match.
