Following plenty of hype, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is finally in action! The Canadians’ first match of the group stages was underwhelming to say the least. After falling behind early in the 21st minute to Bosnia and Herzegovina, they trailed 1-0 through most of the afternoon before Cyle Larin struck with an equalizer at 78′. Despite holding a 13-8 edge in total shots with 60% possession, Canada was ultimately unable to pull ahead by the final whistle and secured just one point.
Interestingly enough, the Qatari side found themselves in a similar match flow during their opener against Switzerland. In the 17th minute of that game, they went down 1-0 on a penalty and spent the rest of the afternoon working to catch up. Despite holding possession for just 30% of the match and generating only six shots to 27 for their Swiss opposition, Qatar managed to create a miracle in stoppage time with an equalizing goal from Boualem Khoukhi. Unlike Canada, salvaging a point on the day was certainly a positive on the day.
