The Rockies and Athletics get the kind of number usually reserved for a Coors Field fever dream. This one is in Las Vegas, not Sacramento, and that changes everything. Las Vegas Ballpark brings elevation, desert heat, and a minor-league park profile into a major-league total already sitting at 14. The Athletics just spent three games turning this place into batting practice, tying a franchise record with 15 homers against Milwaukee. The opener alone produced 29 runs, 34 hits, 11 homers, 11 walks, and 35 strikeouts. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Athletics and the Colorado Rockies.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Athletics vs. Rockies prediction, preview
Sean Sullivan makes his MLB debut in one of the worst possible environments for a command-and-deception lefty. The Rockies prospect brings a high-80s to low-90s fastball, a low slot, and carry at the top of the zone. That can work when location is crisp and the air plays fair. His Triple-A line makes this assignment tougher: 5.60 ERA, 5.70 FIP, and 1.65 HR/9. His previous start in this park went 4.2 innings, 12 hits, seven runs, and six earned. Now he gets a right-handed-leaning Athletics order in 100-degree air.
The Athletics’ lefty split gives the matchup its cleanest betting shape. They own a .253/.322/.439 slash, .761 OPS, 31 homers, 60 extra-base hits, and 297 total bases against left-handed pitching. The recent split is even louder, with a 1.072 OPS, .298 average, .358 OBP, .714 SLG, 21 homers, and 25 extra-base hits against lefties over the last two weeks. Brent Rooker’s IL stint removes one major bat, but Jacob Wilson’s return gives the lineup more contact before the power bats come back around.
Nick Kurtz is the centerpiece of the damage case. He enters with 15 homers, a .283/.438/.529 line, .246 ISO, .417 wOBA, and 165 wRC+. The contact profile backs it up with a 94.4 mph average exit velocity, 58.3% hard-hit rate, .397 xwOBA, and 18.5% barrel rate. Shea Langeliers adds 17 homers, a .535 slugging percentage, .252 ISO, .380 wOBA, and 14.8% barrel rate. Tyler Soderstrom brings 11 homers, a .335 OBP, .464 slugging percentage, .346 wOBA, and 117 wRC+. Zack Gelof and Henry Bolte add enough right-handed punch to keep Sullivan under pressure.
Rockies vs. Athletics pick, best bet
Gage Jump keeps this from becoming a blind full-game over. The Athletics lefty is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 2.83 FIP through three MLB starts. His Statcast profile is clean, with an 88.5 mph average exit velocity allowed, 30.2% hard-hit rate, .262 wOBA, .294 xwOBA, .341 xSLG, and 3.8% barrel rate. Colorado has individual threats, especially Hunter Goodman and Mickey Moniak, but the team split against lefties is thin. The Rockies are hitting .239/.294/.349 with a .644 OPS against left-handed pitching, and their last 10 against lefties sit at .220/.287/.312 with zero homers.
Colorado’s bullpen keeps the Athletics’ full-game team total ahead of the first-five version. The Rockies relief group owns a 5.08 ERA, and the staff enters with MLB’s worst run-prevention profile. Victor Vodnik, Zach Agnos, Juan Mejia, and the middle bridge have all carried major traffic risk. Sullivan may survive one early turn through the order, but nine innings in Las Vegas gives the Athletics too many chances. The side price is too expensive at -219, and the full-game total asks Colorado to do more work against Jump than the matchup demands.
Best Bet: Athletics team total over 8.5 (+120)
Final Score: Athletics 10, Rockies 5
Best bet: Athletics TT o8.5 runs (+120) vs. Rockies
