The NBA Finals took a turn for the even more dramatic on Monday night, when the San Antonio Spurs held off a late rally from the New York Knicks to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Spurs are still facing down the barrel of history, as no team has ever successfully come back after losing the first two games of the NBA Finals at home, but 3-0 would’ve effectively meant the series was over.
Game 4 will begin at 8:30 p.m. ET tonight at Madison Square Garden, and all of a sudden, it’s a must-win game for the Knicks. Games 5 and, if necessary, 7, will take place in San Antonio.
New York is a 2.5-point favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook (-135 on the Moneyline), with the point total set to 216.5. The Spurs are +114 on the Moneyline. Below, I’ve broken down my three favorite prop bets from tonight’s marque showdown.
Spurs at Knicks Game 4 Best Prop Bets
- Victor Wembanyama 8+ 1st Quarter Points (-118): San Antonio has won all six games these playoffs in which Wembanyama has recorded eight first-quarter points, and in Game 3, it managed to get him quality looks from close range and switches away from Karl-Anthony Towns.
- Jalen Brunson 3+ Three-Pointers Made (+122): Including the regular season and the NBA Cup final, Brunson has made three or more threes in three of the teams’ six games this season. He didn’t in Games 1 or 2, but that’s largely a function of his missing shots he usually makes, as he had sub-standard accuracy on wide-open and corner threes.
- OG Anunoby 2+ Blocks (+330): Anunoby had at least two blocks in both Games 2 and 3 and has had at least one in all six games against the Spurs this season. Additionally, he predominantly guards De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, who — as drive-happy guards — have been two of the league’s most-blocked players these playoffs.
Victor Wembanyama 8+ 1st Quarter Points (-118)
In Game 1, Wembanyama came out slow, recording five points on two-for-five shooting in the opening frame, and the Knicks ended up winning. In Game 2, he again came out slow, scoring five points, and New York once again won. He rectified that in Game 3, scoring nine points to help San Antonio open up an 11-point lead and hold on for the win. Among his 20 playoff games, he’s had eight first-quarter points on six occasions, and the Spurs are 6-0 in such situations. They’re 6-8 in all other games. Of course, that’s not solely dependent on him — if New York can successfully keep him away from the paint or his teammates don’t find him on lobs, he won’t reach that threshold — but Mitch Johnson will surely emphasize aggression from the first tip.
His shot diet was far easier in Game 3 than in either Games 1 or 2. In Games 1 and 2, only two of Wembanyama’s eight shots came from within five feet of the basket, but all five in Game 3 came from close range. Wembanyama had just six paint touches in Game 1 and eight in Game 2 but 11 in Game 3, and not surprisingly, he scored 15 points in such situations. He’s still struggled mightily overall against Karl-Anthony Towns, shooting just 11-for-27 against him with a four-to-eight assist-to-turnover ratio, but he’s been pretty effective against every other player on the Knicks’ roster, and three of his four buckets came after he’d manufactured a switch onto OG Anunoby.
Jalen Brunson 3+ Three-Pointers Made (+122)
Brunson had a quiet first two games, combining to shoot just 19-for-56 (33.9%) from the field and four-for-17 (23.5%) from beyond the arc. He finally did Jalen Brunson things in Game 3, as though his eight-for-20 (40.0%) accuracy from within the arc was atypical, he nailed three of his five triples, including a clutch 25-footer late in the game to bring New York back within three points. He also hit a pair of threes in the Knicks’ dominant second quarter, in which they outscored San Antonio 42-24 to take a lead into halftime. I trust Brunson’s volume to carry him over this prop; he’s attempted 22 three-pointers in three games, the fourth-most per game he’s averaged in any playoff series.
It’s not like the Spurs have been absolutely smothering him; he’s just been missing shots he typically makes. During these Finals, he’s still attempted 3.0 wide-open threes per game (defined as such when the nearest defender is at least six feet away), 1.3 more than he averaged during the regular season, but he’s made just 33.3% of them after shooting 39.4% on such shots during the regular season. Additionally, he shot 40.7% from the corner during the regular season, but he’s just one-for-four so far this series. In general, San Antonio is relatively prone to giving up catch-and-shoot, wide-open, and corner threes, and it’s not a coincidence that Brunson made at least three treys in both of the teams’ regular season matchups.
OG Anunoby 2+ Blocks (+330)
This might be overreacting to a small sample size, so to be safer, you could easily go with Anunoby 1+ blocks (-146). However, Anunoby recorded two blocks in each in Games 2 and 3, and he’s consistently been a defensive playoff riser, averaging more blocks per game in the playoffs than the regular season in five of his six appearances. He’s had two other two-plus-block performances these playoffs, in Game 3 against the Atlanta Hawks and Game 2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and a four-for-15 hit rate carries +275 implied odds. He’s been forced to play some small-ball center at times this series without either Towns or Mitchell Robinson on the floor.
This series, Wembanyama has often caught the ball on the perimeter, forcing Towns out of the paint to chase him. In that case, it becomes incumbent on Anunoby, who has spent most of this series defending De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, or Dylan Harper, who are always threats to cut to the basket when Wembanyama has the ball. Additionally, all three like to decelerate on drives, but unlike Mikal Bridges, Anunoby has the strength and body control to recover from a blow in time for a block. Fox and Castle are both among the 45 players who have been blocked at least 0.8 times per game these playoffs.
