It took until June, but a team finally scored four earned runs on Cam Schlittler. The 25-year-old had a 1.50 ERA entering last start against the Guardians. Four earned runs across 4.1 innings bumped that average up to 1.89—so terrible! It’s still the third best ERA in all of MLB. He’s the Yankees’ ace despite pitching in a rotation with Gerrit Cole and Max Fried, which is quite the accolade this early into his career.
His last outing wasn’t good, but it shouldn’t worry fans. All elite starters are bound to slip up every so often. The bounce back should be exceptional, especially against the Red Sox. Schlittler was good during the 2025 regular season, but his postseason start against Boston is what made him a fan favorite. He once again dominated the Red Sox this season, allowing one earned run and four hits over eight innings. Although its been just two starts, he seems to have a mental edge over Boston, which should excite New York fans.
Connelly Early was supposed to start this matchup, but Saturday’s postponement switched things up. Now it’ll be Ranger Suarez facing Schlittler for the Sunday game. Suarez has a 3.38 ERA this season, but his previous two starts have been poor. He’s allowed nine earned runs, 14 hits and five walks in 10 innings against the Guardians and Braves. That said, he allowed just one earned run across four starts prior to these games.
Suarez pitched against the Yankees already this season, allowing four earned runs on five hits in 4.2 innings. The Yankees won 4-1, but this time, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton won’t be in the lineup due to injury. That’ll give the veteran lefty some relief, but he’ll still need to shut down Ben Rice.
Yankees vs. Red Sox Pick, Best Bet
The question isn’t whether Schlittler pitches well, it’s whether the New York lineup can score runs without Judge and Stanton. Rice is superb, but he won’t be able to carry the team on his own. That’s where Paul Goldschmidt steps in. The veteran is a machine against left-handed pitching, batting .385 this year in 52 at-bats. He’s batting .187 against righties this year.
Between Rice and Goldschmidt, the Yankees should provide enough run support for Schlittler. Still, it’ll be a low-scoring game.
