The outlook for the San Antonio Spurs starts with Victor Wembanyama. Standing 7-foot-4 with an 8-foot wingspan, there is no match for his frame in this series or in the NBA. Wembanyama finished with 12 rebounds in Game 1, despite largely struggling throughout. He averaged 11.5 rebounds per game in the regular season and tallied 11+ boards in 38 of his 64 games played. Throughout the postseason, he is averaging 10.8 rebounds per game and has pulled down 11+ rebounds in nine-of-18 playoff games. The unanimous Defensive Player of the Year still left some production on the floor in Game 1 from a rebounding perspective, with Josh Hart tallying 15 rebounds of his own.
Wembanyama is a tone-setter on both sides of the ball and can grab just about every rebound he sets his mind to. Even while struggling and lacking some energy in the series opener, the Frenchman pulled in 12 boards. Expect more of an all-out effort from the Spurs star, with the entire team needing to play with desperation tonight. It has been impressive to see Wembanyama meet the weight of the moment across this postseason already, so expect the same tonight with 11 rebounds being a comfortable bar for him to clear.
Victor Wembanyama to Record 25+ Points (-205)
Expect this level of desperation to show in the scoring department for Wembanyama tonight as well. He finished with 26 points in the series opener despite shooting 6-for-21 from the field and 2-for-9 from beyond the three-point arc. The two-time All-Star averaged exactly 25.0 points per game in the regular season, recording 25+ points in 34 games. Across the postseason, Wembanyama is averaging 23.3 points per game. However, if you exclude the game he got ejected from and the game he left with a concussion, this number increases to 25.7 points per game. He has scored 25+ points in nine of the 18 games overall.
The Spurs star managed to clear this total while struggling as a shooter in a major way in Game 1. The 6-for-21 shooting performance in Game 1 was his second-worst in terms of efficiency across the entire playoffs. New York frequently put Karl-Anthony Towns on Wembanyama, which is a matchup the Spurs should be comfortable attacking. Count on him recording 25+ points for the second straight game and the 10th time this postseason.
Jalen Brunson to Record 30+ Points & Assists (-167)
As is expected to be the case, Jalen Brunson took on the bulk of the scoring responsibilities and was the difference-maker for the Knicks down the stretch in Game 1. Despite battling some knee/ankle issues during the matchup, Brunson finished with 30 points and two assists. In the postseason, the Villanova product is averaging 27.1 points and 6.3 assists per game. He has recorded 30+ combined points and assists in 10 of the 15 postseason games. That’s even while he has seen his workload decrease at times due to the team holding a comfortable lead through many of these playoff games, which has allowed for additional rest.
New York leans on Brunson’s shoulders for production and he has proven capable of carrying the load. Expect the Knicks to continue trusting Brunson as their lead decision-maker on nearly an every-play basis. With the success of his late-game shot-making in Game 1, don’t be surprised if San Antonio shakes up the coverage and forces others to beat them. Assists could be more of a factor tonight and back Brunson to record 30+ combined points and assists for the second straight game and for the 11th time in the postseason.
Julian Champagnie to Record 3+ Made Three-Pointers (-109)
One of the biggest bright spots of this season for San Antonio has been the growth in production from Julian Champagnie. After being cut by the Philadelphia 76ers, the St. John’s product has become a key part of this Spurs core. The 24-year-old posted career-best averages of 11.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 38.1% from deep. He averaged 2.4 made three-pointers per game and made three or more perimeter shots in 33 games. Champagnie has taken his game to a new level in the playoffs, posting averages of 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds while playing 30.5 minutes per game. He is shooting 40.2% from deep in the playoffs on 6.7 perimeter shots per game.
Champagnie is averaging 2.7 made three-pointers per game and has made three or more perimeter shots in eight postseason games. This includes shooting 5-for-10 from deep in Game 1 of this series and 6-for-10 from the perimeter in Game 7 against the Thunder. Champagnie benefits from being lower on the defensive scouting report and has done a nice job making opponents pay. Defending the three-point line is one of the biggest weaknesses in this Knicks’ defense. New York finished the regular season ranked 22nd in opponent three-point attempts allowed and 20th in opponent three-point percentage. Count on Champagnie to continue making them pay for leaving him open and for three perimeter shots to be a comfortable bar to clear.
