This has been one of the most improbable runs to a major final in recent memory. Maja Chwalinska is currently the No. 114-ranked player in the world and has never been ranked higher than No. 113. Prior to the 2026 French Open, she had only won one match in the main draw of a major. Including qualifiers, Chwalinska had played in 14 majors prior to this. In 12 of those majors, she never made it out of the qualifiers. Chwalinska made it to the main draw in Australia last year, but lost in the first round. Her only ever win in a main draw came in the first round of Wimbledon in 2022. Now, she is in a major final at Roland-Garros.
Maja Chwalinska has played way more tennis than Mirra Andreeva in this tournament. That is because she had to win three qualifying matches just to get to the main draw. This final will be her 10th match at Roland-Garros in 19 days. She is the first woman to ever make the French Open final as a qualifier and joins Emma Raducanu (2021 US Open) as the only two women ever to make a major final as a qualifier. History is on Chwalinska’s side there, as Raducanu won that US Open and became the first qualifier to ever win a major title.
This has not been a fluky run by Maja Chwalinska. Her tennis has been legitimately fantastic. In the nine matches she has played, she has only dropped one set. Chwalinska has also always been a great clay player, even despite not being able to handle the competition at the top level until now. She has three career WTA 125 titles, and all three of those came on clay. That includes the title she won in April of this year in Portugal.
Mirra Andreeva Preview
This is Mirra Andreeva’s chance to send her career into the stratosphere. Andreeva has been one of the bright young talents in the sport since the start of 2025. She won two massive WTA 1000 titles early in 2025, Indian Wells and Dubai. She also made back-to-back major quarter-finals at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, showing she can get it done on any surface. Andreeva has consistently played great tennis over that stretch, making her the No. 6 player in the world in the live WTA rankings. She now has a chance to win her first major title at just 19 years old.
If Andreeva wins this title, she will become the 10th-youngest woman to ever win a major title. She would join a list of greats like Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Steffi Graf in that group of 10 youngest major winners. The sky is truly the limit in her career, but this Roland-Garros title would be a real launchpad to take her career to the next level.

My best bet for this match is for Maja Chwalinska to cover the spread of +5.5 games. Some things are just meant to be. Chwalinska has played excellent, fearless tennis throughout this tournament. She is playing like somebody who has nothing to lose… because she doesn’t. All of the pressure in this final is on Mirra Andreeva. Chwalinska should continue to play carefree tennis and give Andreeva some real challenges. The Russian might end up winning the match because of her superior raw talent. However, Chwalinska should make it really tough on Andreeva and make this a tight Roland-Garros final.
