Daikin Park has already produced two entirely different versions of the same dangerous series. Pittsburgh opened with a 10-6 win, powered by three-run homers from Oneil Cruz and Brandon Lowe. Houston answered Wednesday by turning an 8-3 deficit into an 11-9 win, scoring eight times in its final two innings. The Pirates enter the rubber game at 33-29 after scoring at least nine runs in four consecutive games and 44 across their last five. The Astros remain buried at 28-35, though Wednesday offered a glimpse of the offense required to escape that hole. Yordan Alvarez collected four hits, Isaac Paredes homered, and Cam Smith finished the comeback with a two-run triple in a six-run eighth inning. One team arrives with a sustained offensive surge. The other just authored its most restorative win of the season. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Houston Astros.

Pirates vs. Astros prediction, preview
Thursday’s starting matchup brings more intrigue than stability. Jared Jones is making his second major-league start since September 2024 after returning from right elbow surgery. His first appearance back was thrilling and hazardous: 4 1/3 innings, seven hits, five earned runs, two walks, two home runs, and six strikeouts against Minnesota. Jones reached 101.5 mph, opened with nine consecutive fastballs at 100 mph or higher, and generated 15 whiffs across 77 pitches. That raw force creates an enormous ceiling, though Pittsburgh limited him after setting a five-inning objective in his return. Kai-Wei Teng has supplied Houston with the steadier body of work, entering 3-3 with a 2.57 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 43 strikeouts across 42 innings. His 36.3% sweeper usage has driven the run, holding hitters to a .185 wOBA with a 32.8% whiff rate. His 11.4% walk rate and .341 wOBA allowed to left-handed hitters create the opening Pittsburgh is equipped to attack.
The Pirates have become a brutal assignment for right-handed pitching. Their order can press Teng with Spencer Horwitz, Lowe, Bryan Reynolds, Ryan O’Hearn, and Cruz from the left side or as switch hitters, while Nick Gonzales has supplied damage from the right side. Cruz owns the loudest contact profile in the matchup: a 95.9 mph average exit velocity, 61.1% hard-hit rate, 19.6% barrel rate, and .364 xwOBA. His 419-foot three-run homer Tuesday gave him 14 homers and 44 RBI. Lowe followed with his team-leading 15th homer, backed by a .375 wOBA, .364 xwOBA, and 13.4% barrel rate. O’Hearn returned from the injured list after batting .289 with seven homers and 29 RBI before his quad strain, then immediately added another left-handed threat. Gonzales has been the conversion engine, batting .314 with 65 hits and going 10-for-21 across a five-game hitting streak. Teng’s sweeper can miss any bat in that order. His weaker left-handed split leaves him navigating Pittsburgh’s best construction for damage.
Jones’ challenge became sharper when Houston posted its lineup. Alvarez bats second, with LaMonte Wade Jr. fifth and Taylor Trammell seventh, giving the Astros three left-handed attacks against a pitcher who allowed both home runs in his return to left-handed hitters. Alvarez is already controlling the series. He hit his 21st homer Tuesday, matched his career high with four hits Wednesday, and now carries an 11-game on-base streak. His underlying authority is overwhelming: a 94.8 mph average exit velocity, 54.2% hard-hit rate, 19.2% barrel rate, and .493 xwOBA. Jeremy Peña reaches Jones first after batting .364/.432/.576 with two homers across Houston’s last 10 games against right-handers. Paredes turned Wednesday’s game with a two-run homer, while Smith owns a .346 xwOBA and 14.1% barrel rate before supplying the go-ahead triple. Jones can make Houston look overmatched for stretches. He also has to face Alvarez’s left-handed thunder before handing a limited outing to a bullpen the Astros just broke.
Astros vs. Pirates pick, best bet
The strongest objection is that either starter can seize the night. Jones may own the most overpowering five-inning ceiling on the slate, while Teng’s sweeper has already carried him through established major-league lineups. The relief situation makes a prolonged pitching duel difficult to trust. Pittsburgh’s cleanest late-game arms absorbed the damage Wednesday: Mason Montgomery threw 26 pitches before Gregory Soto allowed three hits, one walk, and three runs while recording no outs in Houston’s six-run eighth. Jones is unlikely to erase the need for meaningful middle relief in his second start back. Houston restored Josh Hader on Wednesday, and he earned the save with a scoreless ninth in his season debut. His return improves the final inning, though the Astros still needed five relievers after Spencer Arrighetti exited in the fourth. The closed-roof setting keeps weather from manufacturing offense. These lineups, workload constraints, and compromised bridges supply enough danger on their own.
The side markets require trust in the least comfortable portion of either club. Pirates moneyline at -105 asks Jones and a battered bullpen to preserve whatever Cruz, Lowe, O’Hearn, and Gonzales generate against Teng. Astros moneyline at -114 asks an offense still fighting season-long inconsistency to defeat the hottest right-handed-pitching attack in the matchup. Astros alternate team total over 4.5 at +115 carries serious appeal through Alvarez, Jones’ restricted length, and Pittsburgh’s relief usage. Pirates team total over 4.5 at +114 is equally live through Teng’s left-handed vulnerability. The full-game total captures both pressure points. Jones can flash triple digits and still surrender damage before an early exit. Teng can land sweepers and still struggle with Pittsburgh’s left-handed force. After 36 runs in two games, neither offense requires borrowed confidence.
