- Maul is the same as he’s ever been — filled with rage and seeking revenge. For the moment, his attention has turned away from his eternal enemy Obi-Wan Kenobi and toward those who double-crossed him in the underworld. He tells Rook Kast that while many are suffering under the Empire’s thumb, there are some who are prospering — the Pykes, Crimson Dawn, Looti Vario — thanks to HIS misfortune. And soon they will all pay. Those who think they could take what was his will find they were gravely mistaken.
- Maul engineers the beginnings of his retribution by starting a conflict between local gangsters Deemis and Loot Vario. After Vario surprisingly takes out the strong Deemis, Maul and his Mandalorian and Zabrak associates stage an assault on the police headquarters where Vario was taken and snatch him up. But as Maul points out, this event also serves a greater purpose.
- It turns out Maul has been having visions of a potential apprentice, someone he believes can be “the weapon which can help us destroy all those who have betrayed me, including Darth Sidious.” That would-be apprentice is Devon Izara, who had been jailed for petty theft, and Maul and his cronies take with them.
- I wrote about Devon Izara after last week’s two-episode premiere, but the cracks in her Jedi facade are already showing. She’s willing to steal food as no one will even miss it, but Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki admonishes her for it before she’s ultimately caught. He advises her to go along with her detainment, and is clearly still holding on tight to the Jedi ideals they learned in the Temple (and which might have contributed to the downfall of the Jedi). This is evident later on when Daki tries to stop Maul’s escape with Vario and Devon, but ultimately chooses the many over the one when Maul destroys a pedestrian walkway to force Daki to make a choice. We’ll see if that choice winds up contributing to Devon turning on him in the end for abandoning her when she needed him.
- Ever persuasive, Maul attempts to sway Devon to his side. Maul tells Devon that she has been indoctrinated by the Jedi since she was a child and now it is time for her to adapt. The Age of the Empire is a dark time. Maul drives that point home by asking Devon what it means to be a guardian of peace and justice in a time of lawlessness. On the other hand, if she’s willing, he promises that he can show her a “pathway to power the Jedi didn’t teach you.” Maul says it’s no longer a matter of good and evil in the galaxy and claims he’s not the villain in this story. He wants to convince Devon that they are on the same side.
- Getting back to Vario, Maul took him alive because Vario claims he can help Maul get to Krim and the Pykes. Vario helps the Pykes import their spice into the Janix system. Like Vario, the Pykes betrayed Maul and he wants to create a scenario where he disrupts their spice deliveries so he can get close enough to Krim to kill him. He successfully ambushes the Pykes, getting his own bad ass hallway destruction scene similar to that of Darth Vader in Rogue One and Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian. The Pyke captain confirms that everything that was once Maul’s in the Shadow Collective now belongs to Krim, which gets the captain killed and helps explains why Maul is out to get Krim.
- Speaking of the Shadow Collective, after hearing that name from Vario, local police captain Brander Lawson is asking around about Maul’s former syndicate. My colleague Nick Friar gave some background on Lawson, but here we see him as a sharp and dedicated investigator, albeit one not afraid to break protocol to keep the Empire from butting in despite orders to report any Maul sightings immediately. We also get a brief glimpse into his home life, as we meet his son and learn that the boy’s mother might be out of the picture, but wants him to come visit. Lawson seems to disappoint the boy by saying that he should wait until Lawson can go with him. We’ll have to see if this becomes a larger plot point this season.
