Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord, the new Disney+ animated series starring Sam Witwer, arrived on April 6 with a two-episode debut and new episodes will drop weekly through the May 4 finale.
While it’s obviously a vehicle for one of the most popular Star Wars characters of all-time in Maul, it also introduced the audience to a previously unseen former Jedi padawan who could have a big impact on this series and beyond.
Who is Devon Izara?
In Chapter 1: The Dark Revenge, we first see Devon Izara with Master Eeko-Dio Daki on the planet Janix. Leading up to the series, Devon is described as a “disillusioned young Jedi Padawan” and it fits here. She seems more frustrated and impulsive than the Jedi we’ve come to know and love over the years.
Master Daki is hungry and Devon wants to steal some food, noting that the market won’t even miss it. Despite Daki saying not to do it because they can always depend on the kindness of strangers (which appears to go about as well as one would expect in this dark era of the Empire), Devon attempts to steal the food anyway and is caught and imprisoned. Despite Captain Brander Lawson appearing sympathetic to her, she won’t cooperate with him and is taken by Maul when he comes in to kidnap Looti Vario.
Maul senses that Devon is “the weapon which can help us destroy all those who have betrayed me, including Darth Sidious.”

Devon Izara has never appeared in a Star Wars movie or show prior to Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.
What will Devon Izara’s role be in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord?
As noted above, Maul sees Devon Izara as a weapon he can wield against his enemies in his eternal quest for revenge.
Maul tells Devon that she has been indoctrinated by the Jedi since she was a child and now it is time for her to adapt. The Age of the Empire is a dark time. Maul drives that point home by asking Devon what it means to be a guardian of peace and justice in a time of lawlessness. On the other hand, if she’s willing, he promises that he can show her a “pathway to power the Jedi didn’t teach you.”
Maul says it’s no longer a matter of good and evil in the galaxy and claims he’s not the villain in this story. He wants to convince Devon that they are on the same side. The question will be whether he can push Devon from the light into the dark and corrupt her. Maul pitched Ahsoka in the Clone Wars finale on joining him to defeat Palpatine, and we’ve seen him briefly work with Ezra Bridger in the Rebels animated series. Both of those characters resisted Maul’s dark side pitch, but both appear to be stronger in the light than Devon is here. She’s unmoored by the sudden shift in her life as well as the galaxy at large, and Maul — like the dark side itself — can be persuasive. Given the state of the galaxy and what Devon has experienced since Order 66, it’s understandable why his pitch could be appealing.
The biggest fan theory so far may hint at Devon’s ultimate fate. Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord has already been renewed for Season 2, but some are also seeing shadows of George Lucas’ reported original plans for a Star Wars sequel trilogy where Maul would have taken an apprentice by the name of Darth Talon. Like Devon, she was a Twi’lek and fans have been connecting the dots. Which has not gone unnoticed by the Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord team, including supervising director Brad Rau.
