Los Angeles Dodgers run line -1.5 (-115) vs. Texas Rangers
There are certainly instances where betting the run line on the home team isn’t advisable. Some are against it because if they’re winning by one, they don’t get those extra at-bats to clear the -1.5. However, I like this matchup a lot for the Dodgers against Rocker. He’ll only be making his second start this season, going five innings against the Reds, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. He has a much more daunting matchup tonight against a team that dominates both the slider and four-seam, which is what Rocker uses the majority of the time.
At least from what we saw in his first start, Rocker bumped his slider up from one of his secondary pitches to his main pitch. Against the Reds, he threw it almost 40% of the time. The Dodgers, dating back to last year, have a combined .355 wOBA with a .235 ISO against it. Against the four-seam, the Dodgers combine for a .378 wOBA with a .239 ISO. Rocker also mixes in a sinker, which, as you can imagine, the Dodgers crush as well. I mean, what don’t they hit well? With Rocker not showing consistency at the major league level and his struggles against lefties, this feels like one of those offensive outbursts from the Dodgers tonight, clearing them to win this game by at least two runs.
Milwaukee Brewers over 4.5 runs (-120) vs. Washington Nationals
The Brewers enter this game averaging 5.8 runs per game, the fourth-highest average in the league. They have an opportunity to pad that stat when they face Jake Irvin and the Nationals (who, to their credit, are averaging 5.9 runs per game). It’s a bit shocking the Nationals continue to run him in the rotation as he’s never had an ERA lower than 4.41, an xERA lower than 4.30, and is coming off a season where he had a ridiculous 1.9 HR/9 through 180 innings. He allowed 38 home runs last season, with 26 of them to lefties. Lucky for the Brewers, they can load up on lefties for tonight.
Irvin is picking up where he left off last season. He’s made two starts for nine innings, allowing eight runs on 11 hits, including two home runs. As mentioned, the Brewers can stuff their lineup with lefties, and they’ll likely have at least five in it tonight. Once Irvin departs, he’ll give way to a Nationals bullpen that, over the past week, has amassed an 8.07 ERA with an xERA of 7.82, a 6.5 BB/9, and 1.5 HR/9 over 29 innings.
Dustin May over 2.5 earned runs allowed (+111) vs. Boston Red Sox
It’s been quite the start for Dustin May in a Cardinals uniform. He’s made two starts for 7.1 innings and has allowed 13 runs on 17 hits for a 15.95 ERA and an xERA of 6.94. Sure, an ERA of almost 16 is insane, but even the xERA of nearly seven doesn’t help out any arguments. These aren’t cheap hits either, he’s allowed a 55% hard-hit rate and a 10% barrel rate. I don’t think May is as bad as we’re seeing, but until there are any signs of improvement, I’m going to continue to play the over on his earned runs allowed.
Batters to the Plate Parlay: Brewers/Red Sox/Mariners over 3.5 (+176)
This is a market I’ve recently started playing with that I’m enjoying a lot. People love the NRFI/YRFI markets because it’s fun to sweat out those quick first-inning bets. Well, this is another version that I’m looking to bring to light. Essentially, we’re betting on the opposing starter not to have a 1-2-3 inning. If four hitters record a plate appearance in the first inning, the bet wins. That said, on a single leg, these -200. So if we put a few of these together, we can try to double our money or better. I’ll be trying this play out in each M-F article and see how we do. To find these bets, go to the game that is mentioned, go to the first inning markets, and look for “Batters to the plate.”
For this one, I’m going with the Brewers, Red Sox, and Mariners. We’ve discussed both the Brewers and Red Sox already, so let’s discuss why I like the Mariners. They’ll be facing the Astros starter Tatsuya Imai, who recently made his MLB debut. He’s got great strikeout potential, but has also been insanely wild with his command. Through 8.1 innings, he’s averaging almost a walk per inning with a 7.5 BB/9. The Mariners have two very patient hitters atop their lineup in Brendan Donovan and Cal Raleigh. Dating back to last season, Donovan has an 8.6% BB% against righties, while Raleigh is at 12.8%. While the sample is small, opposing hitters have a .500 OBP against Imai when he starts behind in the count 1-0.
