Pittsburgh Pirates over 4.5 runs (+105) vs. German Marquez
The Pirates offense has been rolling to start the season. Coming into today, they’ve scored a total of 45 runs, which is the 10th best in the league and giving them an average of five runs per game. Tonight, they have a great opportunity to keep that rolling against the Padres and German Marquez. One has to legitimately question how long Marquez will last in the Padres rotation. We’ve only seen one start from him in a Padres uniform but it was while allowing four runs on eight hits, including two home runs, to the Giants in three innings. For reference, the Giants have scored the least amount of runs in the league currently with 26. This isn’t anything new for Marquez either, over the past two seasons, he’s posted an ERA north of 6
At least from his first start, Marquez was down to two pitches he threw, a curve and a four-seam. He incorporated a sinker last year but only threw it a handful of times in his first start. The Pirates offense crushes four-seamers and tonight lineup combined for a .355 wOBA and a .195 ISO against it. This Pirates offense is sneaky and can be very left-handed heavy. Last season, Last season, lefties tagged Marquez for a .393 wOBA, 12 of the 23 home runs he allowed and a 44% hard-hit rate. Marquez may look more like an opener than a starter tonight.
Brandon Woodruff over 6.5 strikeouts (+119) vs. Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox are scuffling at the plate and currently have the worst record in baseball at 2-7. Naturally, with that kind of record, they’ll be striking out a lot, which they are. They currently own a 27.8% K%, which is the fifth-highest in the league. It’s not as if they’re just getting unlucky either, they have a 33% swing-and-miss rate and are chasing pitches out of the zone 33% of the time. Both of those stats are amongst the worst in the league. Now they’ll face Woodruff, who likes the work low in the strike zone, and the potential for him to rack up strikeouts feels high.
Woodruff already showed off his strikeout potential in his first start against the Rays with six strikeouts through five innings, including a 10.5% swing-and-miss rate. The Rays have been one of the toughest teams to strikeout, owning a 18.8 K%, which is the second-lowest in the league. With that in mind, now he’ll face one of the easiest teams to strikeout and has been chasing out of the zone. While this feels like a high total, I like him reaching this mark while getting +119.
Detroit Tigers vs. Minnesota Twins Game Total Bases Under 23.5 (-110)
DraftKings Sportsbook has a massive offering of markets that you may not even know are available. Total bases for the entire game is one of them and is one I like to play a lot. I’m going under for the Tigers and Twins for a couple of reasons, for a few key reasons.
This game is going to be cold and as the night goes on, will fall below freezing. First pitch is expected to be around 35 degrees and go under 30 by 10 p.m. Winds will be blowing out a bit toward right but nothing substantial. Either way, this is horrible hitting weather and not one where you’ll see the ball traveling as you would on a night in July.
The pitching matchup is tough as well. Casey Mize got a bit lucky in his first start but still stuck out nine through six innings against the Diamondbacks. The Twins are striking out a lot, especially against righties with a combined 32% K%. Joe Ryan will have a tough matchup against the Tigers but again, this atmosphere for hitting is less than ideal.
