Ole Miss is firmly in the College Football Playoff as things stand, but don’t want to test the committee if the team were to lose one more game and then lose Lane Kiffin to LSU. Meanwhile, Mississippi State has a chance to play spoiler in a rivalry game here, and is playing with house money as the home underdog.
Let’s breakdown a prediction and pick for Rebels vs. Bulldogs.
Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State prediction, preview
Mississippi State is just 1-6 in its last seven games, and while good teams win, great teams cover — and that’s exactly what the Bulldogs have been doing. Miss State is 8-3 ATS on the season, including 5-1 ATS at home, and will be ready to go for a monster rivalry game. The Bulldogs are very familiar with the underdog role this season, going 6-2 ATS as a dog overall, including 3-1 ATS as the home dog — with an outright win over Arizona State.
The only team to come into Starkville this season and cover as the favorite was Georgia. Miss State has fared well in the Egg Bowl in recent seasons, going 5-1-1 ATS in the last seven matchups (the under has also cashed in all seven of those meetings if you’re eyeballing the total). Mississippi State has a great chance to play spoiler here, and potentially send Lane Kiffin off to a new gig with a bad loss in his final game with the Rebs. All of the distractions in this game surround the Ole Miss side, and all of the pressure if on the Rebels to win and get good seeding in the CFP.
The Bulldogs have been much better than expected this season, playing Tennessee, Florida, Texas and Arkansas all within one possession in SEC play. Look for the home dog to rally here on Friday afternoon in the Egg Bowl.
