This is a pretty interesting spot for both teams, as well as a good data point game to find out what each of these Big 12 contenders truly are. Texas Tech pounded two of the worst teams in the country in its first two games, going for over 60 points in each game, while allowing a total of 21 points. The first real competition came last week at home in the form of Oregon State, but the 0-3 Beavers have proven to be broken, and the Red Raiders won and cover the 24-point spread.
Meanwhile, Utah hasn’t shown us much more through three games. The Utes began the season with an impressive 43-10 road win at UCLA as a short favorite, but that victory carries far less weight after seeing how the Bruins have fared since. The Utes also destroyed Cal Poly, and got a strong road win and cover at Wyoming.
The kickoff in this game is also of interest, slotted into the noon eastern games. That makes it a 10am local kick in Salt Lake City, and 11am body clock kick for Texas Tech. While the start time is peculiar, I don’t think it necessarily provides either side with an edge. Maybe the Utah home crowd is a bit down, but this is still a huge conference game.
While Texas Tech has a lot of preseason hype, and the early numbers match up with it, the Red Raiders have not been forced to prove anything. All three games have been at home, and the competition has been abysmal. I’ve felt the Utes were the better team from the start, and they at least have two real road wins under their belt to start the season.
Kyle Whittingham is a tremendous coach, and has raved about his offensive line and defense. Quarterback Devon Dampier has proven he can be a difference maker for the Utes as well. I think Utah is the better team, and at home here would consider laying it at a field goal or less.
