This one is the game of the week on Saturday night in Norman. We have the lower-ranked team a growing home favorite, as Oklahoma was bet from -1.5 to -3 on the preseason line. The spread touched as high as OU -6 this week, and has settled at -4.5. I’d lay it with the Sooners if you want to just play the spread, but I’m going a different direction. I’m fortunate enough to have some preseason numbers in pocket with OU a short favorite, but I like them to come out and control this game early and go on to win, so I’ll craft that game script into a bet where we don’t have to lay points.
Michigan wasn’t all that impressive in Week 1, defeating New Mexico at home by a score of just 34-17. Bryce Underwood played fine in the game, but now you have a true freshman quarterback going into a hostile road environment for a big Saturday night game against an elite defense. Remember that this defense held Alabama to just three points in a late season matchup in the SEC.
One of the Wolverines better pass rushers also got a targeting penalty last week, so will be forced to sit the first half of this game. Combine that with the freshman QB in the hostile environment and I think that should all help the Soonrs in the first half here.
John Mateer threw for nearly 400 yards in his Oklahoma debut, tossing in three touchdowns and running in another one. This offense, which had massive struggles at receiver and offensive line last season, is back on track. Mateer has protection, pass catchers, and even more skill out of the backfield. I expect the Sooners to pull away at home against a Michigan team I’m still not high on. The defense is solid for the Wolverines, but I have a lot of questions about how they’ll move the ball, particularly early.
I’ll likely add to this game in some fashion before kick, but I think the double result creates a really strong angle in this one. Oklahoma to get out to a first half lead and then win the game is correlated with some of my angles on Michigan, and that’s how I’m playing this one.
