Boston College Eagles vs. Michigan State Spartans predictions, picks for Saturday 9/6/25

Boston College defeated Michigan State in Chestnut Hill last season in the Red Bandana Game — a big night game on campus for BC that draws the most electric crowd of the season. Sparty nearly won the game, and while they covered, BC took it on a big play late. Now it’s time for some revenge at home for Michigan State.

Jonathan Smith has the coaching advantage in this one over Bill O’Brien in my book, and may also have a key edge within the game. Dylan Lonergan injured his shoulder against Fordham, and while he resumed practicing in full later in the week, may not be 100% playing in this one. With potential quarterback issues for the Eagles, I like Sparty to play tough defense in a Saturday night home game and have some good schemes on offense to win with margin.

Michigan State has a difficult conference schedule in the Big Ten, making these non-conference home games massive if it wants to make a Bowl. Sparty is extremely experienced on offense, returning nine total starters. Aidan Chiles returns at quarterback with his top pass catcher, Nick Marsh. But more importantly, the offensive line for MSU is deep and improved. The defense is also expected to take a leap in year two under Smith, just as he built up that side of the ball with Oregon State.

Last year Boston College was able to hang its hat on dominant defensive line play. But this year the Eagles depart their elite pass rushers, which I expect to be an issue against the improved Sparty defensive line. BC was great at home last season, finishing 6-1, but won just one of five games on the road. This will be a big stage on Saturday night, and I expect the home team to thrive.

CFB Pick: Michigan State -3.5 (-110) 1.5-units
