A 15-game MLB slate kicks off on Wednesday with several standout matchups. That includes a series finale in Milwaukee, as the Brewers take on the rival Cubs. Later, the Padres hope to make it three in a row with a victory over the Mets. Tonight, the Dodgers will attempt to earn their first sweep in weeks during their matchup with the Reds.

Clay Holmes less than 3.5 strikeouts
The Mets may lack big names in their rotation, but Clay Holmes has pitched like a borderline All-Star for much of the year. Through 113.2 innings of work, the right-hander has notched a 3.40 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. The caveat for the former reliever is that length is somewhat difficult. Holmes has pitched into the sixth inning only twice over his last six appearances.
Having thrown more at this point than any other season of his career, Holmes’ arm is surely a bit tired. Unsurprisingly, the 32-year-old has seen a noticeable decline in his swing-and-miss ability. The veteran has notched more than three strikeouts only once over his five outings in July. It’s doubtful that trend changes tonight against a contact-heavy Padres team. San Diego hitters are averaging the third-fewest K’s per game (7.03) in 2025. Keeping that in mind, whiffs could be hard to come by for Holmes this afternoon.
Jose Ramirez more than 1.5 total bases
Scoring has been a struggle all season for the Guardians, currently stuck below .500. Still, Jose Ramirez remains one of the league’s top hitters. The third baseman is slashing .295/.370/.519 with 21 home runs and 56 RBIs. That level of productivity with virtually no lineup protection is quite impressive. It also makes J-Ram a threat against any arm, regardless of what his teammates are up to.
That’s especially true against a Rockies pitcher such as Kyle Freeland. Despite serving as the ‘ace’ of baseball’s worst rotation, it’s been a tough season for the southpaw. Over 19 starts, the former All-Star has recorded a 5.24 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 74 strikeouts. Even away from hitter-friendly Coors Field, the ninth-year pro owns a lackluster 4.68 ERA. A switch-hitter such as Ramirez should find success from the right side of the plate, where batters are hitting .315 vs. Freeland. Cleveland’s face of the franchise only needs one big hit to deliver in this spot tonight.
Will Warren more than 15.5 outs
It’s been a difficult few weeks for the Yankees, largely due to poor pitching. Rookie Will Warren has emerged as a rotation mainstay, but that doesn’t mean he’s the most consistent. The youngster has terrific stuff, but he’s prone to the occasional blowup game. Therefore, a 4.82 ERA and 1.44 WHIP despite a 10.7 K/9 rate isn’t surprising. Still, a 3.70 FIP suggests that positive regression could be on the horizon.
Erratic performances aren’t unique to the Yankees. Since July 1st, the Rays have scored the American League’s fewest total runs (90). At this point, Warren probably deserves more trust than Tampa Bay’s hitters. The right-hander has pitched more recently, going at least 5.1 innings in three of his last four games. Expect more of the same during tonight’s pivotal contest in the Bronx.
Corey Seager more than 0.5 walks
A Lone Star State turnaround has brought the Rangers back into playoff contention. The team’s biggest catalyst has been their offense, scoring the league’s fourth-most runs since June 1st (250). Leading the charge is superstar shortstop Corey Seager. Despite missing over 30 games, the slugger is slashing .270/.377/.486 with 15 home runs and 38 RBIs. Seager has tallied at least one hit in 18 of his 22 outings this month (.333 batting average).
However, it’s actually the 31-year-old’s plate discipline that offers the most value tonight. The Rangers will face Angels starter Jose Soriano for the second time this season. Through 9.2 innings of work against the Rangers, he’s surrendered seven total bases on balls. Seager, in three career games against the right-hander, has gone 4-for-6 with three walks. Another free pass feels likely given the way Texas’ top batter has been swinging lately.
Jeffrey Springs more than 4.5 strikeouts
It’s been a brutal year for almost every Athletics pitcher other than Jeffrey Springs. The left-hander has notched a solid 4.13 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 95 strikeouts through 120.0 innings. As things stand, this could be his last start for the A’s. That should be a relief, considering the hitter-friendly nature of Sacramento’s Sutter Health Park. Still, Springs has handled himself well at home (4.27 ERA).
While a 7.1 K/9 rate doesn’t stand out, the 32-year-old is still capable of generating whiffs. That’s especially true heading into tonight’s matchup. The visiting Mariners have notched baseball’s third-most strikeouts against left-handed pitching (282). Springs has recorded 22 combined punch outs over his last three meetings with Seattle. That bodes well for his chances of reaching five K’s on Wednesday.
Nick Kurtz less than 1.5 total bases
In the span of just a few weeks, Nick Kurtz is rapidly becoming a household name. That’s due in large part to the first baseman’s historic performance against the Astros last Friday. This season, the 22-year-old is slashing .305/.378/.671 with 23 homers and 59 RBIs. Simply put, it’s difficult to fade the slugger with those kind of numbers.
As good as he’s been, Wednesday’s game isn’t the most advantageous for Kurtz. Mariners hurler Bryan Woo has enjoyed a career year in 2025 (2.91 ERA, 0.95 WHIP). Left-handed batters are hitting a lackluster .216 against the All-Star this season. In addition, Kurtz actually has a worse batting average at home (.297) than he does on the road (.313). Against one of the American League’s best pitchers, I’m not expecting much from the young slugger tonight.
