This week, NASCAR heads south of the border with the inaugural Viva Mexico 250, which will take place on Sunday, June 15 at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. It will be the first time ever that a NASCAR Cup event will be held outside of the United States, although Mexico has previously hosted various NASCAR events. Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, at 2.42 miles long, is set to become the longest Mexican racecourse ever used in a NASCAR event.
In perhaps a fitting conclusion to qualifying in such a unique event, Shane van Gisbergen — who sits just 33rd in the overall standings — earned his first pole position of the season in Saturday’s abbreviated qualifying session. With 16 drivers qualifying for the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, a top finish would go a long way towards propelling van Gisbergen towards those places.
