Opening weekend of the W was everything we could have asked for and more. Exciting storylines? Check. Caitlin Clark triple-double? Check. Paige Bueckers’ first minutes on the professional stage? Check. As teams and fans gear up for the 44-game regular season grind, I’ll be right here tracking major storylines, championship odds, underdogs to win it all, and monitoring how the odds move.

The Favorite: New York Liberty (+225)
The reigning champs may have returned with a fairly different roster from the 2024 season, but their stars are all the same. Breanna Stewart led scoring for the Liberty in their opening game vs. the Aces, putting up 25 points, eight boards and three assists. Sabrina Ionescu wasn’t her usual dominant self, but added eight points to the final total. The biggest take away from game one was the immediate production seen from newbie Natasha Cloud. The former Mercury guard dropped 22 points, nine assists and six rebounds while proving her strong defensive ability with three steals and two blocks. The offensive talent of last year’s champions paired with an additional defensive weapon (did I mention the Liberty ranked third in defensive rating last season?) makes New York the immediate favorite to win its second ‘ship in a row.
Next Up: Indiana Fever (+340)
A C.C. triple-double with a pinch of beef with her rival Angel Reese sums up the dominant performance the Fever had in game one vs. the Chicago Sky. Clark erupted for 20 points, 10 boards, 10 assists while shooting a clean 50% from beyond the arc. While Indiana’s offensive talent isn’t anything new—the team ranked first in FG%, third in scoring (85 PPG) and third in offensive rating in 2024—their defensive performance on Saturday stood out amongst all of the other shots falling. The Fever blocked 10 shots, including five from Aliyah Boston and four from Clark. This is a small sample size in a large pool of 44 games, but holding their opponent to 29.1% shooting and just 58 points in total is a massive statement to start the season. Watch out for the Fever.
In the Hole: Minnesota Lynx (+360)
If you’re new to the W, let me introduce you to Napheesa Collier. The UConn product paired with forward Alanna Smith put their team on their backs last season and won 15 of their last 17 games in the regular season, en route to a finals appearance against the Liberty. With Jessica Shepard back in the lineup—a Stanford alum who missed all of 2024 due to her club team in Italy violating WNBA rules—this Minnesota squad’s ceiling has only increased from last yea. But… how much farther can they even go?! Collier dropped 34 points in the season opener followed by 25 points from Courtney Williams. The margin between the Fever and Lynx is very small, and these are two franchises I’ll be following closely this season.
In the Mix: Las Vegas Aces (+390)
The story of the Aces in 2025 will heavily revolve around how quickly the new combination of players can jell together. Per ESPN, Las Vegas head coach Becky Hammon told reporters before tip-off this past weekend that “she didn’t yet know how good her team can be in 2025 but that she was confident heading into the season.” There’s good news, though, as Las Vegas can build around the nucleus that is reigning league MVP, A’ja Wilson. Wilson put up an admirable 21 points and 16 rebounds in the Aces’ opening game vs. the Liberty, and that was, unfortunately, the only bright spot of the game.
