The Padres are poised to take care of business on the road tonight, but Mitch Keller’s quiet balance might keep the Pirates in it. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Friday night baseball game between the Pirates and the Padres.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Pirates vs. Padres prediction, preview

The Padres enter this matchup as the clear favorites, and with good reason. Despite their rough road record this season (4-7), they’ve been dominant in their head-to-head matchups against Pittsburgh, sweeping all six meetings last season. San Diego’s offense has struggled at times, ranking 13th in OPS and 21st in runs, but with hitters like Fernando Tatis Jr. (.345, eight HRs) leading the charge, they still possess the firepower to exploit Pittsburgh’s pitching issues. Manny Machado, ever the cornerstone of this lineup, is primed to leverage Keller’s inconsistency, bringing his .279 average and sharp eye for pitch selection into the fray. Xander Bogaerts, despite his modest .243 clip, has the presence and patience to work deep counts and punish a pitcher like Keller who’s prone to walks. Jake Cronenworth, with his patient approach and ability to get on base, stands ready to turn any Keller mistake into a rally. Keller has given up eight runs in his last 17 innings.

Dylan Cease, despite his 5.76 ERA, can be a game-changer if he limits the damage on the road, where he’s been far from his best. However, Pittsburgh’s Mitch Keller has been no better at home (4.91 ERA), and he enters this game coming off three straight rough starts. With Keller struggling, expect a productive outing from a Padres lineup eager to build on recent momentum.

Now, let’s look at the pitching duel. Cease has been inconsistent this season, but he faces one of the weakest offenses in MLB. Pittsburgh ranks 27th in OPS and 24th in runs scored, so Cease has a prime opportunity to regain form against this underwhelming attack. The Pirates’ power struggles, ranked 28th in slugging, will not help them against a Padres staff that boasts an MLB-best 2.86 team ERA. The Padres’ bullpen, while not invincible, has been able to close out games efficiently, ranking 1st in MLB for runs allowed (90), and will likely be able to handle any late-game pressure.

Padres vs. Pirates pick, best bet

While Pittsburgh has covered the run line in five straight home games against National League opponents following a loss, and there’s always an outside chance that a scrappy Pirates side gets hot at home, their inability to consistently generate offense spells trouble in this matchup. Their reliance on Mitch Keller to keep this game close could be the key, but with his recent home struggles, it’s hard to bet against the Padres securing a win.

As for the total, the under has hit in four of the Padres’ last five road games, and given the struggles both teams have had at the plate—San Diego in particular has been inconsistent—I’m leaning toward the under here. Both pitchers, while not perfect, can limit damage and provide length. Keller and Cease both have potential to stifle the offense, especially with Cease needing a bounce-back performance after several rough outings. While both teams have had a penchant for hitting the over lately, this game has the makings of a low-scoring affair.

But, if I’m being completely honest, the total is a bit of a tricky spot here. I think the safe focus should be on the Padres’ pitching dominance and their ability to keep Pittsburgh’s offense in check. Mitch Keller and Dylan Cease both have high potential for volatile outings, but the offenses aren’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard, especially with the Pirates’ struggles.

That said, the under isn’t a lock I’d feel extremely confident about; rather, it feels like a lean at best. If anything, I’d say the Padres Moneyline is the stronger bet. Afterthat shaky start to the season, San Diego’s recent form has been strong, and against a Pirates team that continues to struggle at the plate, the Padres should easily cover the -1.5 run line.

This game has a 4-2 written all over it.

Best bet: Padres (-155) at Pirates
