What happened at Tennessee with Nico Iamaleava and NIL? What’s next?

Nico Iamaleava’s time at Tennessee has come to an end amid a swirl of controversy and consternation. Ross Tucker and Emory Hunt explain how NIL may have played a bigger role than anyone thought on the latest episode of The Ross Tucker Football Podcast.

Tennessee and Nico Iamaleava parting ways over an NIL dispute clarifies one thing — college football’s off-season now mirrors NFL free agency. Hunt called the situation fascinating, mainly because there’s still so much we don’t know. Once the story leaked, he said, it got swallowed by the spin cycle. Most of what’s out there comes from Tennessee’s side, and we still don’t know what was promised, delivered or said. Further, Hunt believes the coverage is already painting Iamaleava in a negative light.

Hunt noted that this kind of holdout behavior is rare for a quarterback; it’s typically something you’d expect from a running back or edge rusher. He proceeded to float the idea that Iamaleava might draw interest from UFL teams, saying the college football bridge may already be burned. And while some schools have paid big for top quarterbacks, Hunt fears the powers that might try to make an example out of Iamaleava.

On the field, Hunt explained that Iamaleava is a talented player. His deep ball is ideal, and he has shown toughness and the ability to handle pressure in big games. Hunt argues that he handles the pressure more efficiently than quarterbacks like Tyler Shough, who is being talked about as a potential first-round selection in this year’s draft. Critics will point to Iamaleava’s performance against Ohio State as an example of him not showing up in big games, and Hunt admits he was overwhelmed. Moreover, Hunt believes there are areas of Iamaleava’s development that need attention. Hunt suggested that Iamaleava still needs to gain weight, be more decisive with his reads and make quicker decisions in the pocket. Ultimately, Hunt hopes Iamaleava lands with a team right away.

Tucker added that schools might feel pressure not to cave to Iamaleava’s NIL demands. Then again, he joked, “There’s always a Jimmy Haslam,” alluding to the Browns’ $230 million fully guaranteed deal for Deshaun Watson that many other teams would never have agreed to. Tucker noted that players often don’t get what they’re promised in college athletics. Like Hunt, he emphasized that nearly all of the public narrative has come from Tennessee and we still haven’t heard Iamaleava’s side of the story.
