We’re a week into the 2025 season, which makes this the perfect time to start placing some MLB prop bets. One of the quickest, and most exciting, wagers on the board is No Runs in the First Inning (NRFI). Figuring out which pitchers thrive early, and which lineups struggle, is key to cashing in on this bet.
Ahead of Wednesday’s loaded slate of games, here are two NRFI bets worth placing on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Giants vs. Astros NRFI (-145)
The Giants have enjoyed an impressive series in Houston, reeling off two straight road wins. During those contests, the Astros have scored a combined three runs. Momentum might shift back to the home team on Wednesday, as ace Framber Valdez will face unproven starter Landon Roupp. The former of the two is a proven workhorse, with an impressive resume for NRFI purposes. Valdez recorded a 2.25 first inning ERA over 28 appearances in 2024.
For San Francisco, it’s difficult to get a read on how Roupp will perform this afternoon. However, the right-hander was impressive in spring training (3.75 ERA, 14:1 K:BB), so there’s reason for optimism. Even more promising is Houston’s lack of hitting early in games. The Astros haven’t scored a first inning run in any of their five outings this season. Stars Yordan Alvarez (.067), Christian Walker (.150) and Yanier Diaz (.071) have all struggled so far. Keeping that in mind, this is an NRFI bet worth taking on Wednesday.
Red Sox vs. Orioles NRFI (-145)
Staff aces are set to duel in the AL East when the Red Sox visit the Orioles. Garrett Crochet will take the mound for Boston after signing a six-year, $170 million contract extension on Monday. The left-hander possesses absolutely filthy stuff, having struck out 209 batters over 146.0 innings in 2024. Over eight career frames vs. Baltimore, Crochet has allowed just two runs while punching out 13 batters.
The success of this NRFI prop bet will likely depend on Zach Eflin. Last season, in 28 games with the Rays and Orioles, the right hander allowed 12 first inning runs (3.86 ERA). In six career starts vs. the Red Sox, he’s surrendered an early score only twice. Boston’s best batters have looked terrible thus far, including Rafael Devers (.000), Triston Casas (.059) and Alex Bregman (.227). Against a crafty veteran such as Eflin, there’s a decent chance their hitting woes continue tonight.
