Per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, first scooped by MLB insider Mike Rodriguez, Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte inked a 6-year, $116.5 million extension with the club.

Fresh off a third-place finish in the NL MVP race, Arizona wasted little time getting a new deal on the books for the former NLCS MVP. Marte recorded 6.3 wins above replacement last season, per FanGraphs, fueled by his 36 home runs and .292 batting average, in addition to a strong glove at the keystone.
The timing of the deal is interesting and marks the third extension he’s signed with Arizona despite being only 31 years old. His second deal was due to run through 2028 at $15.2 million per year. The new contract works as a restructure in addition to an extension, ripping up the old deal. Marte’s new deal will give him a raise at $19.4 million while running through 2030. He will also have a player option for the same amount in 2031, so the deal can run through his age-37 season.
It’s a good commitment for both sides, in my book. Marte is an MVP-level player at his best and will be getting paid like an All-Star, a bargain in the short term for Arizona. Second basemen who rely on athleticism and power the way Ketel does don’t tend to age well, so there is some risk, making it good long term security for the player.
The new contract locks in Marte alongside young stud Corbin Carroll and recently signed ace Corbin Burnes (assuming he doesn’t opt out) through 2030. This deal gives Arizona some peace of mind going into an offseason where Zac Gallen, Eugenio Suarez, and newly acquired Josh Naylor can all hit unrestricted free agency.
