It’s a jam-packed Wednesday across baseball, with all 30 teams taking the field for 15 games. The marquee matchup is a potential pitcher’s duel, with Zac Gallen’s Diamondbacks facing Carlos Rodon and the Yankees. Elsewhere, newly extended ace Garrett Crochet will look to carry the Red Sox to a win against the Orioles. Cole Ragans more than 6.5 strikeouts
Last season saw several Royals break out, including Cole Ragans. The right-hander established himself as one of the best pitchers in the game, dominating hitters with a blistering fastball and a nasty mid-80s changeup. It’s no surprise that the 27-year-old finished second in the American League in punchouts (223), just behind Tarik Skubal. That didn’t carry over to last Thursday, in which Ragans only struck out three Cleveland batters over five innings.
Kansas City’s ace should look more like himself this afternoon against a struggling Brewers lineup. Milwaukee has generated 20 runs over five games this season, striking out at baseball’s fifth-highest rate (10.2 per game). When these teams met in 2024, Ragans K’d eight batters over six innings. A similar performance from the All-Star is likelier than not on Thursday.
Brent Rooker more than 1.5 hits + runs + RBIs
Despite playing in relative anonymity with the Athletics, Brent Rooker has emerged as one of baseball’s biggest power threats. Since 2022, the outfielder ranks ninth in home runs (71) and 11th in slugging percentage (.528). A move to Sacramento’s hitter-friendly Sutter Health Park should only lead to more production going forward.
It’s been a rough week for the A’s, who have been outscored 25-7 over two games vs. the Cubs. However, Rooker went 3-8 at the plate with a home run and two RBIs during that time. He’ll look to continue his hot hitting vs. Jameson Taillon, who struggled last week against Arizona. Up against one of Chicago’s worst starters, Rooker is poised for another busy day at the dish.
Francisco Lindor more than 1.5 total bases
A hyped-up Mets offense has struggled, scoring two runs or less in three of their five games this season. Francisco Lindor has been nothing short of awful, recording just one hit over 15 at-bats thus far. Still, we saw the shortstop suffer a slow start last year, only to turn in an MVP-caliber campaign. It’s only a matter of time until New York’s face of the franchise gets back on track.
That could come as soon as Thursday afternoon. The Marlins will hand the ball to Connor Gillispie, making his second career start in the majors. The right-hander tossed five innings of three-run ball against the Pirates last week. However, the Mets present a much different kind of challenge. Hitting leadoff, Lindor should have ample opportunity to wreak havoc on Miami in this one.
Garrett Crochet more than 1.5 earned runs allowed
The Red Sox made headlines this week, signing starting pitcher Garrett Crochet to a six-year, $170 million contract extension. It’s a move that makes sense; few arms in the league possess the 25-year-old’s talent. Last season, as a member of the White Sox, the All-Star struck out 209 batters over just 146.0 innings. In his first start with Boston, Crochet allowed two runs over five innings vs. the Rangers, striking out four.
Another dominant performance on the mound is certainly possible tonight. However, Crochet will be facing a dangerous Orioles lineup in Camden Yards. Last season, Baltimore had the seventh-highest batting average (.253) against left-handed pitchers. This could be a sweat, but holding an elite offense to one run or less is no easy task.
Kyle Schwarber less than 1.5 hits + runs + RBIs
A dynamic Phillies offense has wasted no time to start the season. The star-studded lineup has scored six or more runs in three of their first four games. Among the names hitting the ball well, Kyle Schwarber has stood out. The burly outfielder has hit .353 while launching three home runs.
Tonight, Philadelphia will host the Rockies and staff ace Kyle Freeland. Never the most consistent pitcher, the 31-year-old was terrific against Tampa Bay last week (6.0 IP, 0 R). Historically, Schwarber has struggled in this matchup, going 1-12 in his career against the left-hander. Even on a hot streak, I’d rather fade the power hitter against a starter that has his number.
Zac Gallen more than 2.5 walks allowed
Following a comeback win on Tuesday, the Diamondbacks will turn to Zac Gallen tonight. The former All-Star has been one of baseball’s best pitchers over the past several seasons. Over 546.0 innings since 2022, the starter has recorded an ERA of 3.25 and 572 strikeouts. He’ll have his work cut out on Wednesday against a loaded Yankees lineup.
As dangerous as New York’s offense is, Gallen is talented enough to put together a stellar performance. However, he looked shaky last week, surrendering four runs and walking four batters in four innings vs. the Cubs. The right-hander now faces a Yankees lineup that led the league in walks (672) last season. It’s difficult to picture Gallen finding his command tonight against the sport’s most patient group of hitters.
