For the first three rounds of the Mexico Open, Brian Campbell ($6,800; 137.5 FPTS) was like a leopard stalking a herd of antelope, successfully getting closer while remaining hidden from view.
Campbell shot a 65 on Thursday and was one shot off the lead. On Friday, Aldrich Potgieter ($7,300; 135.5 FPTS) scorched the course with a 61. Campbell had 65 again.
On Saturday, Campbell had the low round of the day with a 64. It was an unblemished round with three birdies on the front nine and four on the back nine.
Sunday’s final round didn’t get off on the right foot, as Campbell bogeyed the first hole of the day. He bounced back with two birdies but notched another bogey to close out the front nine. On the back nine, he had a birdie and a bogey, but then drained a birdie on the final hole to force a playoff with Potgieter.
Both Campbell and Potgieter went par on the first hole. Campbell then drained a birdie on the next one for his first career PGA Tour victory.
In the $500K Pitch + Putt tournament, Campbell was rostered on only 0.78% of teams.
