Note: De’Andre Hunter has been absolutely balling this season, with a career-high 19 PPG on 46.1% shooting from the field and 39.3% from three. He will presumably start in Cleveland as their SF, displacing Max Strus. Even if he were a bench piece, Hunter will provide a meaningful offensive boost for the Cavs. Not that they needed more offense, anyway.
Caris LeVert will play a sizable role on the Hawks as the secondary playmaker behind Trae Young. The Hawks will continue to look for a Play-In spot. The deadline hasn’t come yet, so there may be more moves to come for Atlanta (I’m looking at you, Clint Capela).

Note: Nurkic moves East to Charlotte, which presumably ends Moussa Diabate’s short-lived reign as the starting center in town (I think?). The Suns receive a decent backup guard in Micic and another bench piece in Cody Martin. It seems like Kevin Durant isn’t going anywhere. Not yet, at least.

Lakers add an explosive weapon in Mark Williams (Feb 5)

Notes: The Lakers continue smashing the trade deadline by moving all-in for LeBron James’ last championship contention window into his 40’s. Mark Williams will give them an excellent rim runner for their ball handlers: James, Luka Doncic, and to a lesser extent, Austin Reaves. Williams is young and hasn’t been healthy, but we’re now seeing the vision of what promises to be an explosive offensive team that’s happy to let Doncic do whatever he likes. The Hornets apparently didn’t value Williams as much as we thought they did. Williams was presumably going to continue developing with LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller, but it appears they aren’t sold on Williams’ future in their organization. At least, not as sold as they are on Knecht.
Brandon Ingram heads North (Feb 5)

Note: Ingram was originally part of the Lakers-Pelicans Anthony Davis Deal as a young player who showed promise. Ingram was decent in New Orleans but ultimately this team never quite took off the way it was supposed to; they have tons of young talent and good players, but it seems like this injury-riddled season was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Ingram will head up to Toronto for a fresh start with Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley, and RJ Barrett. As for the Pelicans, they still have a very competitive team on paper, and this may actually end up being a case of addition by subtraction. Trey Murphy is clearly the focal point of this team, at least in the days where Zion Williamson is inactive (which are many).
Miami Heat finally offload Jimmy Butler (Feb 6)

Note: After months of drama and disputed inner turmoil in the Heat, Miami has finally relinquished Jimmy Butler from their roster and shipped him to a contender. After the manner in which Butler demanded his exit from the Wolves, we’re now seeing a pattern of what a disgruntled Butler is willing to do to switch homes. The Warriors get an aging but effective wing to alleviate offensive pressure off Steph Curry, and the Heat get to move on with their lives.

Note: You have to feel for Middleton, who was a core part of the Bucks’ championship run a few seasons ago. He’s clearly lost a step amidst his injuries and is not the same player. The Bucks are clearly in win-now mode with a top five player on their roster, but one has to question the value of Kyle Kuzma on a championship contender as a third option, especially when he hasn’t played meaningful basketball in…ever.
Kings land Jonas Valanciunas (Feb 5)

Note: It is definitely not all doom-and-gloom for the Kings who have lost star point guard De’Aaron Fox. All-Star snub Domantas Sabonis is still an excellent offensive hub for the Kings to work around. He will be found in his usual spot at the top of the key or in the post handing off balls to cutters and finding shooters on the perimeter. They now have a reliable backup big in Jonas Valanciunas, who will likely not be sharing the floor with Sabonis, but will serve as a decent center off the bench with the occasional ability to stretch the floor. Sidy Cissoko has since been waived.

Note: The highlight of this deal is De’Aaron Fox, who dazzled in his Spurs debut with a stellar 24 point and 13 assist line with just one turnover in a one point victory against the Hawks, but you’ve got to be intrigued by what the Kings are trying to do with the Bulls’ ex two-punch wing combo. LaVine and DeRozan operate on different parts of the court, and the Kings have a de-facto point guard in Sabonis already. Malik Monk isn’t an elite three-point shooter, but with Keegan Murray and LaVine in the lineup, they have plenty of deep-ball threats.
