When will De’Aaron Fox make his debut for the Spurs?

UPDATE: Fox has been upgraded to available for Wednesday’s road game at Atlanta and is set to make his Spurs debut.

The week leading up to the NBA trade deadline has been full of fireworks, and somehow, former All-Star point guard De’Aaron Fox’s move to the San Antonio was only the second-biggest development of the last few days.

In Fox, the Spurs have found a star running mate to pair with franchise center Victor Wembanyama. The new pairing may get to start building chemistry sooner rather than later, too, with Fox’s team debut possibly coming Wednesday against the Hawks.

The 27-year-old point guard is listed questionable with a “trade pending” designation on the NBA’s injury report for February 5 at Atlanta.

If he’s available to take the court, it’s tough to predict exactly what Fox’s debut may look like. He’s certainly a starter, but obviously is new to the offense and isn’t yet integrated into the rotation. Assuming he’s in the lineup, though, he should still receive a significant workload for San Antonio, especially if Chris Paul, who is also questionable, doesn’t play.

The Spurs are 21-26 on the season and sit 12th in the Western Conference, but the addition of Fox significantly improves their outlook. The Spurs have lacked a star presence at either guard slot, so adding a lead guy who can both score and pass the ball is a major boost — not to mention the benefits in the pick and roll game with Wembanyama.

As of Tuesday, San Antonio holds +500 odds to make the playoffs and +120 odds to participate in the Play-In Tournament on DraftKings Sportsbook.
