Former NFL defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and co-host of the McCoy and Van Noy podcast joined Tuesday’s edition of GoJo and Golic live from Radio Row in New Orleans to discuss the key factors impacting the Chiefs–Eagles showdown on Sunday.
McCoy understands firsthand the impact a defensive line can have on a game, and on Sunday, both teams will feature premier defensive tackles for the Chiefs, Chris Jones and the Eagles’ Jalen Carter. He shared what stood out to him about both players heading into this matchup, McCoy praised Jones’ dominance, calling his AFC Championship performance one of the best he’s ever despite what the stat sheet says. He highlighted how Jones single-handedly disrupted Buffalo’s offense, constantly pushing linemen 3–4 yards into the backfield. McCoy explained that Jones’ presence forces adjustments and makes offensive coordinators change plays, running backs redirect, and quarterbacks speed up their decisions just knowing No. 95 is lurking. He notes that Jones is so impactful because he’s a defensive Swiss Army knife. Whether he’s lined up over the center, guard, tackle, or even playing as a defensive end, he’s a nightmare for offenses to handle.
Conversely, McCoy sees something terrifying in Jalen Carter’s game. His observation is rooted not in his current play but in what he can develop into. Despite already being a Pro-Bowler and All-Pro, McCoy believes Carter is still playing purely on instinct and raw talent, not football IQ. Carter’s dominance comes from reacting in the moment, not recognizing plays before they happen. Having played at the highest level, McCoy pointed out that Carter isn’t adjusting his alignment or anticipating movements. He’s just making plays because he feels them. The scary part? Once Carter truly learns the game, he’ll be in the NFL Honors conversation every year.
The Chiefs and Eagles have game-changing defensive coordinators, but Vic Fangio’s first year with Philly stands out. His ability to maximize personnel has been key to their Super Bowl run. McCoy had high praise for Vic Fangio, calling him a true coach and not just someone with the title. According to McCoy, a real coach doesn’t force players into a system but puts them in positions where they can thrive. Fangio has done precisely that, turning what was once a weakness into a championship-caliber defense. He pointed to players like Zach Baun, who went from a special teams role to an All-Pro and Defensive Player of the Year finalist, as proof of Fangio’s impact. He also highlighted how Fangio doesn’t restrict dynamic talents like Jalen Carter. He lets them play freely while building the scheme around their strengths. That ability to adapt and maximize talent is why McCoy believes Fangio’s defense will be a key unit in this Sunday’s matchup.
Everyone already knows that players like Patrick Mahomes and Saquon Barkley will impact Sunday’s game, however McCoy offers another factor that could be a deciding factor in Sunday’s game and that the Chiefs offensive line. McCoy sees the Chiefs’ offensive line as a crucial factor in the Super Bowl, especially with Patrick Mahomes taking more hits this season than ever. He pointed out that while the Chiefs have controlled games by methodically moving down the field—what he calls “playing dominoes” with five, ten, or fifteen-yard gains. That strategy will be tested against Philly’s relentless speed at every level. McCoy highlighted the challenge of facing a defense that won’t give Mahomes the time he’s used to, questioning whether the Chiefs can sustain their success on third downs. With Joe Thuney shifting to left tackle and Philly’s pass rush in top form, McCoy believes the key isn’t whether Kansas City can protect Mahomes all game. It’s whether they can step up and hold the line when it matters most.
