Bryan Colbert Jr. joined Tuesday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to discuss the state of the Commanders and how their culture change could catalyze more success.
Despite falling short to the Eagles in the NFC championship game, the Washington Commanders have a bright future. Going from a franchise that was scorned due to the decisions of their previous owner to this season being one of the NFL’s most captivating teams. Colbert Jr. expressed to the crew how amazed he had been. He had never seen anything like this. Being in media, he has seen coaching staffs change within different organizations; however, for the Commanders, they tore everything down to the studs, hired a new coaching staff, and drafted a rookie quarterback. Regardless of the latest additions, Colbert Jr. contended that every player, from the offensive and defensive line to the strength coaches, was in sync. He attributed the synergy amongst the coaches and players to the culture head coach Dan Quinn has built, and in turn, the team has been successful.
Taking a step off the field, Colbert Jr. shared how the energy around the Commanders’ organization feels completely different under new ownership. While he wasn’t around for the Dan Snyder era, he’s seen firsthand how present and engaged Josh Harris and his leadership team are. Harris is on the sidelines at every game, talking to players, listening, and actively being part of the process, which wasn’t always expected from ownership in the past. Colbert highlighted how key figures like Bob Myers and Harris are involved, not just from a business perspective but also in the team culture. It’s not just the players and coaches building camaraderie; ownership is just as invested.
Some argue that quarterback Jayden Daniels may have had the best season for a rookie quarterback. However, the expectations have increased for Daniels. Despite the expectations, Colbert Jr. does not doubt that Daniels can replicate his performance from this year. Colbert Jr. spoke glowingly about Daniels’ impact; he explained that a player’s never been quite like him. He’s shattered records, fully bought into the team’s vision, and embodies the first one in, last one out mentality. Even though the first one in the last one out cliche gets thrown around a lot, as far as athletes go, it is a reality for Daniels. Colbert Jr. highlighted that Daniels’ work ethic firsthand makes it hard to doubt him. He highlighted how Daniels has already earned the trust of veteran leaders like Jonathan Allen, who told him the defense has complete confidence in their young quarterback. No matter the situation, they believe that if the ball is in Daniels’ hands at the end of a game, they will win. That kind of trust in a rookie, Colbert Jr. said, is almost unheard of. He expects Daniels to keep improving as Washington builds around him. Granted, this was year one with a new head coach, a new offense, and plenty of growing pains, yet the Commanders were already competitive. Colbert Jr. made it clear—don’t be surprised if Washington takes another big step forward next season.
Looking ahead, Colbert Jr. highlighted what the Commanders must do to build on this season’s success. He believes the Commanders are on the right track and must keep building on their momentum. With the draft coming up, he emphasized how well Adam Peters handled last year’s draft and expects another strong showing this time. He praised the foundation Washington has built with its rookie class and the core players still under contract, stressing that continuity is key. His message was clear: don’t overthink it. Keep developing their established culture, continue adding the right pieces, and most importantly, do whatever it takes to protect and develop Jayden Daniels.
