Can Anthony Richardson prove he’s the Colts’ franchise QB?

It’s already been a wild Week 11 in the NFL, with the Bears parting ways with Shane Waldron and now the Colts head coach Shane Steichen again naming Anthony Richardson the team’s QB 1.

Jason Fitz of Yahoo and Fox Sports joined Thursday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to talk about all that and more.

Before talking pigskin, Emerson Lotzia’s new mustache was a topic of conversation all day.

Fitz wondered what it’s like to grow a mustache, admitting he has no idea since it doesn’t work for him. He jokes about whether having a mustache makes someone cool or if it automatically comes with the stereotype of being unable to drive a white van, adding humorously that there must be mustache rules. Not to brag, but Fitz recalled how one time while working with GoJo when he thought Fitz hadn’t shaved that day, unaware it had been two weeks of effort to produce only a tiny bit of facial hair!

GoJo shifts the topic to things people have never done, bringing up producer Yates, who has never had coffee, and a friend who has never chewed gum, even at the age of 35. This leads him to ask Fitz if there have been any other things he hasn’t done besides not growing facial hair. Fitz reveals to the guys that he doesn’t know how to ride a bike, describing how he tried it once as a kid and immediately decided it wasn’t for him. He also never learned to swim, partly due to childhood ear issues that prevented him from practicing underwater. All opening the door for the opportunity for future #CONTENT.

The guys digress and get back to talking about some NFL football with GoJo asking Fitz if the Colts made the right decision to go back to Richardson at quarterback. Fitz criticized the initial decision to bench him, arguing that the Colts should have stuck with their long-term plan. He noted that Flacco’s performance didn’t measure up to his form from last year with the Browns and the Colts should focus on developing Richardson, acknowledging that taking some losses is part of the process with the added bonus of giving him more reps to see if he can play.

Mike Golic Sr. agreed with the move back to Richardson. Still, he defended the earlier decision to start Flacco, saying it gave the team the best chance during their playoff push and respected the efforts of the other 52 players in the locker room. However, with their playoff hopes fading, he firmly stated that the Colts should stick with Richardson for the rest of the season and focus on his growth. Fitz emphasized the importance of sticking with a long-term plan for Richardson’s development. Having interviewed Richardson multiple times, he noted that the quarterback doesn’t appear to lack confidence, so concerns about damaging it might be overstated. However, the constant in-and-out approach could undermine Richardson if the team doesn’t see him as being part of their long-term future. Fitz warned that a rotating door at quarterback in the NFL often means everybody is about to get fired. He stressed that the Colts need to fully commit to Richardson now to evaluate whether he’s truly their guy, especially before next year’s draft, where they might need to reassess their quarterback options.

Following Shane Waldron’s dismissal as Chicago’s offensive coordinator, reports have surfaced suggesting some players believe Tyson Bagent deserves a shot while Caleb Williams takes a break. As the top pick in the draft, Williams has had highs and lows this season. GoJo asked Fitz if Williams needed a break to reset or if it was better for him to push through and face the challenges. Fitz believes strongly in Caleb Williams’ long-term potential and hopes he can weather the current difficulties. He pointed out that the Raiders and Bears passed on hiring Kliff Kingsbury, which looks like a bad decision considering Kingsbury had the right developmental plan for Jaden Daniels. Fitz highlighted the importance of adapting to a quarterback’s strengths early, as Houston did with C.J. Stroud, but criticized the Bears for failing to do the same for Williams.

He noted that Caleb’s bad habits, such as making simple plays unnecessarily complex and extending plays too long, have carried into his professional career. While these tendencies worked in college, they’ve led to many sacks in the NFL. Fitz stressed that the Bears staff must coach Williams better on discipline by simplifying the playbook, limiting his reads, and creating a structured system to help him break these habits.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs are finding ways to win, and their undefeated streak remains a HOT TOPIC. GoJo asked Fitz if he believes the Kansas City Chiefs are the best team in the NFL or if the Detroit Lions deserve that title. Fitz acknowledged that while the Lions look like the complete team on paper, he jokingly said if he had to bet his house, he wouldn’t bet against Kansas City and added whatever deal they made with the devil, HE WANTS IN ON IT. Fitz admitted the Lions are better on paper, but the Chiefs consistently defy expectations, even when they seem broken. He emphasized that Mahomes doesn’t lose close games, making it nearly impossible to bet against Kansas City in a high-stakes matchup, even against a strong team like Detroit. He just can’t be against Mahomes and the Chiefs.
