Can the Rams hold off the Dolphins tonight to stay in the playoff hunt?

The finale of NFL week 10 will occur tonight, as the Miami Dolphins travel to SoFi Stadium to take on the Los Angeles Rams. Marshall Newhouse of the Pregame PowerUp joined Monday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to discuss what to expect in tonight’s matchup and recap some of the biggest storylines from Sunday.

In what was an eventful Sunday night football matchup between the Houston Texans and Detroit Lions, Lions quarterback Jared Goff threw a whopping five interceptions on a difficulty comparable to All-Madden, as Mike Golic Jr. puts it. The Lions’ defense decided to ROAR back, helping stage an instrumental second-half comeback to win 26-23. GoJo asked Newhouse what stood out about the Lions’ ability to stage a comeback, given how they played in the first half. Marshall jokingly said both teams gave the ball away like a 501c3 non-profit. He added the Lions are a team that stays composed even in tough moments, like when they were down by ten and giving the ball away. Despite the turnovers, Jared Goff adjusted, the defense shut out the Texans in the second half, and their kicker sealed the win — a reflection of Dan Campbell’s resilience in this team.

Speaking of teams that find a way to win, Mike Golic Sr. highlighted the Chiefs’ ability to grind out wins, even when their play hasn’t been as dominant in recent weeks. Newhouse noted that as the team everyone measures themselves against, opponents treat every game like it’s their Super Bowl, forcing the Chiefs to adjust and scrape by on offense, defense, and special teams. While their performances may not always look pretty — sometimes chaotic or disjointed Newhouse emphasized that great teams, like the Chiefs, find ways to secure wins. He stressed for the Chiefs, the focus remains on locking in that all-important first-round bye and preparing for the playoffs.

The Panthers and Giants overtime thriller in Munich, Germany, had us hanging on to the edge of our seats. GoJo asked Marshall if he’d seen anything from Bryce Young since being benched earlier this season for Andy Dalton, which might suggest him being the future starter. Marshall responded that Bryce was starting to make a case for himself. Some of the confidence throws he made during his time at Alabama are beginning to resurface — plays where he sees the field, plants his foot, and delivers the ball with pinpoint accuracy. While the talent around him in Carolina isn’t nearly as strong as what he had in college, you can see his confidence growing.

Marshall pointed out that the Panthers are at a juncture where they have to make a significant choice regarding Bryce’s future with the team as they head toward another high draft pick in the upcoming season. They must carefully assess whether Bryce has shown potential to be the focal point of their rebuilding efforts or whether it might be better to explore trading him for valuable assets to kickstart a new development phase. Marshall likened this situation to a trial period for Bryce. He highlighted that his performance for the rest of the season will determine his standing within the team moving forward.

In an attempt to play the old would you rather game, Mike Golic Jr. asked Marshall which team he’d rather be moving forward: the Dallas Cowboys, coming off a blowout loss with Dak Prescott sidelined and Jerry Jones fielding criticism about everything from the team’s performance to the sun in the stadium, or the New York Jets, fresh off an ASS WHOOPING that Kyler Murray and the Cardinals handed them?

Marshall responded humorously that both are tough choices but would rather not be either team. He criticized the Cowboys for their structural issues, pointing out that Jerry Jones’ hands-on approach often undermines both the coach and quarterback. While Jones has built immense organizational value, Marshall argued that his influence has kept the team from being a legitimate Super Bowl contender since their last championship.

As for the Jets, Marshall acknowledged that disappointment is par for the course. However, the Cowboys’ consistent expectations and inability to meet them under Jerry’s leadership make their situation uniquely frustrating. He concluded that the Cowboys’ problems are unlikely to improve unless Jerry relinquishes control — something he doesn’t see happening.

Changing gears to tonight’s matchup, Senior asked Newhouse if he sees any chance for the 2-6 Miami Dolphins to sneak into the playoffs now that Tua Tagovailoa is back. Newhouse responded with optimism; he shared that while the Dolphins are a flawed team, Tua has been playing solid football despite concerns over his concussion history. He emphasized that the rest of the team needs to step up to match Tua’s level of play. Newhouse pointed out Miami’s narrow loss to Buffalo as proof they’re still in the mix and highlighted the connection between Tua and head coach Mike McDaniel as a key factor for the offense. However, he acknowledged potential challenges for Miami, such as Tyreek Hill’s wrist injury, which could impact the team’s offensive performance. Newhouse concluded that while the Dolphins can make a run, they’ll need exceptional play from Tua as they have no margin for error moving forward.

As a former offensive lineman who knows the trenches well, GoJo asked Marshall what he’s seen from the young Los Angeles Rams defensive line, particularly rookies Braden Fiske, coming off a two-sack performance, and Jared Verse, known for his elite pass-rushing ability. Marshall praised both players, highlighting Verse’s ‘country strength’ physicality and ability to push offensive linemen back at the point of attack. While Verse has room to grow in technique and adding counter moves, his raw power off the edge is impressive. Similarly, Fisk has shown toughness and consistency, providing valuable depth to the Rams’ defense. He expressed that while neither player is expected to be Aaron Donald, their contributions as rookies are significant. Newhouse picked the Rams over the Dolphins and cited the Rams’ momentum and motivation to chase a wild card spot in the NFC as key motivating factors.
