The anxiety and stress is mounting for New York Yankees fans, who find their team down 0-2 to the Los Angeles Dodgers as the World Series heads east to the Bronx.
With Game 3 on deck tonight, Yankees superfan Jomboy Media’s Jake Storiale, co-host of Talkin’ Baseball, joined Monday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to discuss the first two games of the Fall Classic and discuss what the Yankees need to do to avoid a dreadful sweep.
Mike Golic Jr. wanted to do a vibe check on Storiale, who was sporting his finest pinstripe turtleneck. GoJo asked Storiale how he was feeling about the news that Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani has been cleared to play Game 3 after sustaining a shoulder injury late in Game 2, jokingly saying he can’t imagine that being music to Storiale’s ears. Storiale initially responds, “It is what it is.” Given the state of the series, Storiale suggests some fans go back and rewatch the 1996 World Series against the Braves, where the Yankees came back from being down 2-0 to win the title. Jake playfully adds a little superstition talk, noting that when it comes to the baseball postseason you’re watching what you eat in the morning and if the Yankees do find it tonight, you got to run something back.
But amid the jokes and superstitions, Jake honestly shares that he is not doing great. He admits that Game 1 still haunts Yankees fans because they should have had it. However, Storiale does show some optimism, stating that if you get a win tonight, then it’s bullpen day with Gerrit Cole on the mound in Game 4 to help start that fan cycle. That being said, Jake concedes you just can’t go down 3-0 to a team like the Dodgers. You just have to win one game tonight and if Yankees can do that, the World Series is back on. If you don’t? Well, then you’re probably looking at people in the front office you don’t even know to try to fire them.
Mike Golic Sr. asked Storiale what’s up with Aaron Judge in the postseason. He responded that it has been tough, mentioning how he and the guys at Jomboy Media went back to look at his postseason numbers from the 2021 postseason, where things unraveled for the Yankees and Judge, to see if there had been a ripple effect. He does bring up Judge’s home run off of Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase in Game 3 of the 2024 American League Championship Series, which was one of the cooler moments of the postseason. But beyond that, there has been nothing much to cheer about from the Yankees slugger. Storiale points out that swing experts have stated that Judge’s swing has been off, which is OBVIOUS. Ultimately, he believes Judge NEEDS to have some good at-bats, and at this point, something has to change, whether it’s cage work or shuffling the lineup, but at the end of the day something’s got to happen for the big fella.
Speaking of big fellas, Giancarlo Stanton’s bat has been LIVE for the Yankees. He blasted another homer on Friday, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead in Game 1. GoJo asked Storiale how he would encapsulate Stanton’s performance so far. Jake exclaims we have seen it before with Big G, referencing the 2020 season, where he knocked around Tyler Glasnow, and in the 2021 Wild Card game, where he hit the Green Monster at Fenway several times in a loss to the Red Sox. This has been a test to see if Stanton is that guy, and he is showing that he is, even if in this series it seems as if Stanton has become a third wheel to Judge and Juan Soto.
With the Yankees staring down the barrel of a possible World Series sweep, GoJo asked Storiale what the Yankees needed to do to avoid the indignity of a four-and-out. He simply said, “You got to get the lead early.” He mentions Walker Buehler has been a mixed bag, although in his last start he looked good, and added he has all the moxie in the world. But the next game will be a bullpen game, so if the Dodgers are down, they are probably not looking to use their big bullpen weapons. Jake thinks if you get that early lead, Dave Roberts won’t have his good bullpen arms to lean on most likely, and that could be the Yankees’ path to victory and back into contention in this series.
