The NFL trade deadline is slowly creeping up on us, and Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp is a name that is heavily speculated to be on the move.
Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. break down the latest trade talk surrounding Kupp, the potential teams that could use his services and how this move would impact the Rams going forward ahead of their Thursday Night Football matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings are a 2.5 point favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook.
As much as the focus should be on Kupp’s return to the Rams amid an early-season ankle injury, he found himself answering questions from the media about the trade rumors circulating. Kupp responded, “I am going to be where my feet are. That’s all I know. I have a job to do here.” GoJo expresses it is one of those things we take for granted on the outside. Whether it was free agency or even the trade deadline, just the idea of players having to constantly deal with their mortality or their place on the chess board being messed with has to be pretty jarring going into a game you are trying to get ready for. Senior says it’s especially true when you have been with one organization your entire career and you have a family. He mentions the trade deadline has become a bigger day where big players have moved to new teams. Ultimately, looking at the football aspect, there is no doubt what a great player Cooper Kupp has been, but Senior believes some buyers should beware on Kupp due to his age and his injury history.
Reports have also mentioned that the asking price for Kupp seems to be a second-round pick, however, the Rams will have to foot the bill for Kupp’s remaining salary. GoJo says that if this trade were to get done, it seems tailor made for a conditional pick, where you tie the severity of that pick to how much playing time a new team gets out of Kupp. GoJo concedes that the Rams may have to come down off of their asking price if they really want to move him and focus on how much they need to get in return to feel good about trading Kupp. As far as potential trade partners, GoJo mentions teams like the Washington Commanders, Pittsburgh Steelers and the cross-town Los Angeles Chargers as potential landing spots for Kupp.
GoJo asked Senior if he really thinks Kupp could be moved before the deadline. Senior said if he were another team, he would have to ask if he would be OK giving up that capital for a guy that has been hurt? He emphasized that it depends on how much of the tab the Rams pick up and ultimately says he DOESN’T think Kupp will be traded. GoJo disagrees and says there has been so much smoke there’s got to be fire on this. He thinks Kupp gets moved, contingent upon the Rams eating a fair amount of his salary and recouping a third-round draft pick or a conditional pick in exchange. GoJo makes the observation that the Rams have reversed polarity going from “Bleep them picks” to doing one a good job of drafting quality young players. Can they re-COOP (pun fully intended) enough value to try and continue to make a run with a roster built around Matthew Stafford? Only time will tell.
