NFL Week 7 delivered a thrilling Super Bowl LVIII rematch between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs. To close out the week, fans will be treated to a Monday Night Football doubleheader, kicking off with the Baltimore Ravens facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, followed by the nightcap featuring the Arizona Cardinals against the Los Angeles Chargers.
NFL veteran offensive lineman and Pregame PowerUp regular Marshall Newhouse joined Monday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to break down the highlights from Week 7 and preview tonight’s exciting matchups.
The Chiefs got the better of the Niners in their Super Bowl LVIII rematch by a score of 28-18. It is clear that this year’s Chiefs look a lot different from the Chiefs of the past. Their high-flying and explosive play may not be as prevalent, however, they are finding ways to win due largely to their defense. Mike Golic Jr. asked Newhouse if the undefeated Chiefs are the best team in the NFL, to which Newhouse responded with a resounding “Yes.” He does say, however, that the Chiefs are winning in ways we don’t necessarily like to watch. Newhouse adds the Chiefs we got accustomed to seeing were creative offensively and had a deep shot or two or three per game. They had Travis Kelce running what Marshall called his “Make-A-Wish” routes with Patrick Mahomes, and now teams are taking that away. Despite that, the Chiefs are playing better defense and are figuring out different ways to win.
Mike Golic Sr. shifts the discussion by asking Newhouse how deep is the NFC and who sits at the top. Newhouse believes the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the conference’s best. He adds that Detroit is so impressive that it is hard to watch them and not have a smile on your face, from how they run the ball to how Dan Campbell coaches them. In a best-on-best showdown between the Lions and Vikings on Sunday, Newhouse points out that even after the Lions failed to convert a fake punt and David Montgomery fumbled, the team went right back to him. Not to mention that they have Jahmyr Gibbs and the defense is playing opportunistic football. This highlights Campbell’s strong confidence in his players and his trust in their ability to bounce back. Marshall says that there is nothing you can’t say you don’t love about the Lions. The Vikings are still a contender; they just ran into a team that is hotter than they are, according to Newhouse. And regarding Tampa Bay, he says that Baker Mayfield is playing the most free and confident football of his career.
Speaking of Tampa Bay, tonight’s Monday Night Football doubleheader features a matchup between the aforementioned Mayfield and the Bucs against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. Senior asked Newhouse if the Buccaneers can stop Baltimore’s rushing attack or if any team could, really. Newhouse recalls playing with Derrick Henry and says, “He is just one of those guys that makes your job easier.” He also highlights how the Ravens, in addition to utilizing Henry, use Jackson’s rushing ability to make their running game even more formidable. Newhouse feels as though no one can stop their rushing attack other than themselves. He expresses how, despite the critics after Week 1 debating whether Father Time has caught up to Henry, John Harbaugh and the Ravens remained patient. They kept being consistent and physical, so much so that we now see some arguing that Henry was the steal of free agency.
In the other matchup on Monday night, we’ll see the Cardinals take on the Chargers. Much attention surrounded the Chargers in the offseason revolved around mortgaging their weapons in the receiving core. GoJo wonders how they have managed to find themselves at 4-2 and now possibly becoming a legit thorn in the sides of some teams in the AFC. Newhouse shares that he thinks this is the Harbaugh special, affirming that Jim Harbaugh is deploying the same strategy as his brother John, aka being physical and leaning on his running game.
