The NFL world is buzzing! We were privy to two blockbuster trades on Tuesday: the Las Vegas Raiders sending Davante Adams to the Jets for a conditional third-round pick and the Bills sending a 2025 third-round pick and a 2026 seventh-round pick to Cleveland in exchange for Amari Cooper and a 2025 sixth-round pick acquired from Detroit.
With the trades now complete, we have many questions. Are the Las Vegas Raiders in a rebuilding phase? Also, which receiver, Cooper or Adams, will have a bigger impact on their new team?
FOX Sports Radio host and die-hard Raiders fan Jason Fitz of Yahoo Sports joins Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. to give insight into these questions and how these acquisitions will impact these teams.
In an attempt to do a wellness check on Fitz, GoJo asks Fitz how he was doing after hearing the news of the Raiders trading Adams. Fitz noted that the Raiders are in full rebuild mode for the first time in all his years as a fan. He adds rebuild mode isn’t necessarily something you get better at because teams that are constantly in rebuild mode often suck at rebuild mode—further adding sarcastically that a third-round pick who may be a second-round pick is surely going to help the team for years to come.
With Fitz accepting the reality that the Raiders are, in fact, in rebuild mode, Senior asked him if this started for the Raiders when they did not select a quarterback in the Draft. Fitz says signing Gardner Minshew gave them an insurance plan for how the Draft would shake out as far as quarterbacks. Multiple sources told Fitz that the Raiders were AGGRESSIVE in the Draft, going as far as offering three first-round draft picks to Washington to select Jayden Daniels, which the Commanders, of course, turned down. He says it’s not like they didn’t try and frankly states you can’t make a team make a trade that is not interested in a trade.
With the Raiders being in a total rebuild, GoJo poses the question to Fitz of what the future of a superstar like defensive end Maxx Crosby might be, given a team like Detroit, who just lost Aidan Hutchinson to injury, may be in the market for a pass rusher. Fitz firmly believes that Crosby is UNTOUCHABLE and concedes you cannot trade Khalil Mack and Maxx Crosby in the same 10-year period and feel good about it as an organization. He adds that Maxx is the FACE of the franchise and validates his importance by stating he was the key player vouching for Antonio Pierce to become the Raiders head coach to owner Mark Davis.
Returning to the blockbuster trades, Senior asks Fitz which receiver will help their team more, Adams with the Jets, or Amari Cooper with the Bills. Fitz acknowledges how some fans may consider him a Jets hater; in fact, he is a realist regarding how that offense looks. He adds the Jets were not devoid of a No. 1 caliber wide receiver, so let’s not move the goalpost. People were anticipating Garrett Wilson would come in and be a triple-crown winner, leading the league in yards, receptions, and touchdowns. Further Fitz believes Wilson has been massively underused in this offense, stating there is no plan or scheme to use him, it is more of a “let’s force feed him the ball to make him happy” situation. Adding Adams does not give this offense a weapon, and Fitz states that, frankly, the offense has not figured out how to use the offensive weapons they already have.
On the other hand, Fitz believes the Bills have figured out how to work their weapons into the offense. It is clear that they need that receiver on critical third downs to make a play, and Cooper is capable. However, Fitz raises concerns about his consistency as a player and whether Josh Allen and the offense can keep him engaged. Fitz says Cooper can have a 200-yard breakout game one week and then disappear the next. Ultimately, Cooper’s success with the Bills depends on whether he can be consistent week in and week out.
