Jets vs. Bills on Monday night put a bow on Week 6 in the most dramatic fashion possible. It was a game full of penalties and missed field goals due to strong winds and a vintage Hail Mary pass by Aaron Rodgers, but as the saying goes, the Jets will Jet. The Jets ultimately lost the game late to their division foe on a late Rodgers interception.
Charlotte Wilder, co-host of Oddball, joined Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. for Wilder Wednesday on a Tuesday to dive into the Jets’ crushing loss last night and the incredible impact of the Detroit Lions’ winning culture on their hot start this season.
Wilder reported live from Metlife Stadium for Pregame PowerUp on Monday. She informed the guys not to brag, but one of her followers on Instagram pointed out that she predicted the outcome of the entire game from her very WINDY live report, where she mentioned that it would be a pretty funny game where neither team would be able to kick. The wind would work in Josh Allen’s favor. To her credit, she could not have been more spot on. GoJo follows up by recalling his comment on the game last night where he asked how drunk is this football game and compared it to if the game picked up “McLovin” from the party in Superbad and started doing donuts in the parking lot with all of the penalties and missed field goals.
Many people expected the Jets to emerge with an added spark last night after firing former head coach Robert Saleh. GoJo adds that the Jets added more offensive motions and explosive plays and asked Wilder if this is just the same old Jets team. Wilder expresses that it is ridiculous for the Jets to think firing Saleh would solve their problems. She empathizes with the frustrations of Jets fans, as far as Saleh not having the best record and being a defensive-minded guy, and ultimately chalks all this suffering up to the Jets being cursed. Further, the communication and trust for the Jets seem to be compromised from her perspective, especially with Rodgers coming out and blaming his receiver for his late-game mishap.
GoJo says the lack of cohesion within this Jets offense was apparent in Rodgers’ post-game press conference, where he was visibly frustrated at the penalties and officiating. Asked about the play where he threw the interception, Rogers chose to say that Mike Williams did not run the right route instead of saying that he would take care of those mistakes in-house. Wilder even points out that Williams was DEVASTATED after he dropped the pass, laying on the ground as if he was injured. For Rodgers to go up to the podium and say he ran the wrong route seems only to add insult to injury.
Not only that, but Charlotte says this latest post-game presser by Rodgers seems to highlight a culture of fear. She admits that you would want to fear letting your teammates down. However, it is different when you are playing with a fear of being blamed if you do something wrong.
All of this conversation, of course, happened before the the Jets made their huge move to acquire Rodgers’ go-to guy, Davante Adams, from the Raiders. Bringing in a weapon like Adams could be exactly what New York needs to breathe life into their struggling offense. If Adams and Rodgers can reignite that old magic, it might just be the spark that helps turn the Jets’ season around. Fingers crossed for some big plays ahead!
The Detroit Lions, on the other hand, seem to be the exact opposite of the Jets and have established a strong culture that will be helpful for them as they maneuver through the season without their No. 1 defensive star, Aidan Hutchinson. GoJo awarded Lions offensive lineman Penei Sewell with the Campbell’s Chunky Offensive Lineman of the Week award for his attempt to score on an end-around play against the Cowboys. He even extended the title honorary offensive lineman to Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson for creating plays for the big guys to get in the end zone. The opportunity for a lineman to have a role in this Lions’ offense is a testament to Detroit’s family-like culture that GoJo likens to those in sports movies of a band of brothers playing for one another.
