The NFL season is flying by, and Week 6 is now in the rearview mirror. This past weekend ran the gamut — impressive rookie quarterback performances to embarrassing loses that have fans wondering which head coaches are on the hot seat.
Former NFL offensive lineman Marshall Newhouse stopped by Monday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to give his insight on the latest headlines coming out of Week 6 and what we should expect out of this HIGHLY anticipated divisional matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets.
There were two teams that suffered some of the ugliest loses of the week in the Dallas Cowboys, who got taken to the woodshed by the Detroit Lions, 47-9, at Jerry World. The Jacksonville Jaguars, who are basically the NFL’s unoffficial official London team at this point, suffered a 35-16 drubbing at the hands of Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears. Mike Golic Jr. asked Newhouse whether Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy and Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson will make it through the rest of the season. Newhouse responds with he feels that both coaches are on borrowed time.
He adds that with the way in which the Jaguars lost to the Bears in their “second home” of London, signals a downward trajectory for the team from Duval County. Newhouse mentions that it seems as if Pederson has lost his magic from his years in Philly, and that his lack of success in Jacksonville shows that there a big holes in his coaching style that have not translated well, which is a surprise to Newhouse given they have a capable quarterback in Trevor Lawrence and enough around them. However, they are not doing the little things to win. When it comes to McCarthy, Newhouse believes he has had a target on his back even prior to him accepting the position to be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, which comes with the territory of leading America’s team but when you have the Lions running several trick plays with their offensive lineman has McCarthy’s job in flux to put it nicely.
Despite the blowout win against the Cowboys, the Lions suffered a big loss as well. Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson suffered a gruesome leg injury that was later reported to be a broken tibia. Mike Golic Sr. asks Newhouse how the Lions will have to adapt without having a key player from their defense and whether the Lions should start considering other free-agent pass rushers such as Jets holdout Haason Reddick. Newhouse believes that we will start to find out how agrresive Dan Campbell wants to be and whether they lean more into the personnel they have in-house versus testing free agency.
Williams had impressed in his first international game against the Jaguars, going 23-of-29 while throwing for 226 yards and four touchdowns. Senior mentions although it was against a bad team and you have to take your wins when you can get them, he asked Newhouse what he thought of Williams’ performance. Newhouse admits that despite the hype that he had coming out of college, and the critiques to how he may be different as a person, Caleb Williams is a BALLER! Although it will take him time to develop, he is doing all the right things a young quarterback should be doing, from processing multiple progression reads and only using his feet when he has to.
Getting to tonight’s MNF showdown, last week’s firing of Robert Saleh sent shockwaves through the NFL, leaving us wondering how will the Jets fair going forward without Saleh in their AFC East divisonal matchup against the Bills. GoJo asked Newhouse what we can expect from the Jets tonight, to which he says no matter the head coaching move, the team will play with a spark although it won’t be sustainable. Further he believes that the game will be centered around Aaron Rodgers and newly appointed playcaller Todd Downing’s execution on offense. Although the Bills are going through their struggles, Marshall contends that the division is still up for grabs.
