Can the Dolphins’ ground game help turn around their season?

The Miami Dolphins came into the 2024 season with a lot of promise.

In the offseason, they made some splashy moves, signing their franchise quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to a massive $212.4 million extension. The excitement around Tagovailoa signing his extension for Dolphins fans was short-lived, as he would get a concussion in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills. Without their franchise quarterback at the helm, it has forced the Dolphins to dig DEEP and find ways to win as they sit at third in the AFC East after securing a win against their division rival New England Patriots.

Veteran Dolphins offensive tackle Terron Armstead checked in on Friday’s edition of GoJo and Golic to discuss what the team needs to do to build on the momentum from last week’s win and what we can expect from the Dolphins’ offense moving forward with their bye week coming up.

Mike Golic Jr. asked Armstead what worked well for them in their showdown against the Patriots that they can use to build off of coming off their bye. Armstead responded firmly with the run game. He adds that it is no secret that the run game has to be a staple for the Dolphins’ offense from now on. In their last game against the Patriots, the Dolphins rushed for 193 yards. Armstead says that the Dolphins have a stable of home-run threat running backs and that he and the offensive line are looking to move bodies up front to create running lanes.

With so much debate in the football world brewing about quarterback cadences and offensive linemen being on the same page. Mike Golic Sr. asks Amrstead about the adjustment that offensive linemen must make with a backup under center versus a starter. Terron’s face LIGHTS UP with a smile as he acknowledges to Senior that few people even pay attention or know how a quarterback change impacts an offensive lineman. He says there is a unique way the terminology comes out of the huddle, and even the differences in the snap count cadence can make a difference, mentioning the differences between Tua’s cadence and Tyler Huntley’s cadence.

Tua’s concussion against the Bills has brought head injuries back to the forefront of the league’s safety conversations. Senior asked Armstead how he has seen the league change regarding head injuries. Terron mentions that the league puts you through an extensive process; he mentions that in Week 4, he had a concussion against the Seahawks. It had been 10 seasons since his last concussion and Armstead says the protocols, psych exams and doctor visits are VERY different from 10 years ago. Armstead applauds the league’s efforts to ensure players are safe because football is a violent sport.

GoJo asks Armstead how Tua is recovering and what he has been like since the concussion. Armstead says that Tua is doing well and has been a boost of energy around the team facility. Despite the injury, Tua is still finding creative ways to help the team, including popping into meeting rooms to add input, and he still sees himself as a team leader.
