One of the all-time great wide receivers joined GoJo and Golic, as Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. welcomed Larry Fitzgerald to the show on Wednesday.
After talking a little bit about the journey he’s on with his son as he begins the college recruitment process and marveling how different that is than Larry’s journey to Pitt, Senior wants to talk about the way some young wide outs are coming in and making an immediate impact at the NFL level. That didn’t used to be the case, Larry excluded, of course. What’s the difference? Larry says teams are really looking to get their players active and involved early on. Given how large the contracts are, teams are looking to see exactly what they have. Larry says he was lucky to come into the league with Anquan Boldin already in place as the bell cow in Arizona, which allowed Larry to grow and develop into himself during his rookie year. Like, for instance, Larry points out that Ja’Marr Chase came into the league already as the WR 1 on his team, with all the accompanying expectations. He thinks that expectation has changed, especially for guys drafted in the first 20 picks.
Speaking of young receivers, GoJo pivots to Garrett Wilson and the Jets. Obviously the Jets have been in the news this week for all the wrong reasons with the dismissal of head coach Robert Saleh. GoJo points out that so much of this season has been marked by that offense trying to play catch up quick with Aaron Rodgers. Larry at one point had to adjust to the arrival of a future Hall of Famer in Kurt Warner, so from his own experience how hard is it for young WR like Wilson to adjust to playing with a legend like Rodgers? Larry admits that it does take some time to build that chemistry, but he knows that as the season goes along Rodgers and Wilson will get there.
Senior notes that a lot of guy’s career can be dictated on where they land in the Draft. So he wonders: Can great wide receivers can overcome middling quarterback play? Larry is quick with an example of a guy who he thinks has had a great career — Mike Evans. Sure he got a few years with Tom Brady at the tail end of TB12’s career, but Evans has consistently delivered whether it be Brady or Jameis Winston or Ryan Fitzpatrick or Baker Mayfield. Larry says it doesn’t matter who the coordinator is, who the quarterback throwing him the ball is or the situation, Evans just delivers. In fact, Larry takes it a step further calling Evans the most underrated wide receiver of this generation.
Going back to Chase for a moment, it’s been well known that we he was looking to get paid in Cincy this offseason. Now it didn’t happen, but Larry says he has been very impressed with how Chase has performed this season. Larry says Chase is special special and that sooner rather than later that man is gonna get PAID.
In addition to talking football, Larry joined the Golics to talk about the team up between his foundation, the Larry Fitzgerald Foundation, and DraftKings on special NFL “Pink ‘Em” charity pools throughout the month of October to help raise funds for breast cancer research. It’s a cause near and dear to his heart, as Larry lost his mother to breast cancer and a lot of people around him have been affected by the disease. You can learn more about how to get involved here.
