“Vandy We Turnt”: Commodores QB looking to cash in on Alabama upset

In a GIGANTIC upset, the Vanderbilt Commodores defeated the former No. 1 team in the nation, Alabama, 40-35, last weekend. It was a feat that Vanderbilt hadn’t accomplished since 1984, when the Commodores were victorious against the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, 30-21.

This year’s game ended dramatically in the Music City, with Commodore fans rushing the field in excitement after dethroning the nation’s top team. Fans eventually took the celebration to another level by picking up the goalposts and matching with down the streets of Nashville, crashing several bachelorette parties in the process.

Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia played LIGHTS OUT in the victory, throwing for 252 yards and two touchdowns. To capitalize on the moment, Pavia tweeted out his NIL agent’s contact information with the caption “Vandy We Turnt.” In an era where college athletes can make money off their name, image and likeness, Pavia is taking matters into his own hands to inform brands that he is open for business.

Pavia even shared with On3 that his dream NIL deals are Ferrari, Lululemon, Dr Pepper and Nike. The guys on GoJo and Golic weighed in on Pavia’s bold move, with Mike Golic Sr. acknowledging that is where we are with college athletes.

Whether Pavia has cashed in on any NIL deals remains to be seen. Still, a trend is starting to build where players and schools are capitalizing on live moments from games and interviews. One such example came from Baylor head football coach Dave Aranda at Big 12 media days where he told Craig Smoak of 365 Sports, “We’re paying players.” That quote fueled Baylor’s “We Pay Players” NIL T-shirt campaign. With the college football season extended thanks to the 12-team College Football Playoff, more upsets could be in store meaning we could be seeing more players looking to turn their wins into cash.

Vanderbilt next travels to Lexington, Kentucky, to face the Kentucky Wildcats, who are 13.5-point favorites at DraftKings Sportsbook.
