We were treated upsets and highlights galore in what some may argue was the most entertaining weekend in football, from college to the pros. Former NFL offensive lineman and regular on the Pregame PowerUp with Trey Wingo, Marshall Newhouse, stopped by GoJo and Golic to unpack some of the marquee matchups and storylines from NFL Week 5.
The Chicago Bears delivered an impressive 36-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers. In the game, rookie first-overall pick Caleb Williams threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns. Mike Golic Jr. asked Marshall about Williams’ performance against a Panthers team with several question marks at this stage in the season. Marshall says you are seeing a guy getting better with decision-making and attributes his positive progress to getting more reps under center.
Newhouse speaks from a place of experience when he mentions that fans may view preseason games as boring or irrelevant, however for players no matter if they are veterans or rookies, preseason reps are vital to preparing for the season ahead. Further, he does not believe that every game Williams plays will be as stellar as his performance against the Panthers. However, what he says we can count on is the small improvements to his game. In addition to Williams’ decision-making improving, Marshall also noticed the quarterback’s footwork becoming noticeably better, something which Williams has been often criticized for.
Mike Golic Sr. highlighted that in Week 5, all three starting rookie quarterbacks — Jayden Daniels for Washington, Bo Nix for Denver and Williams for Chicago — secured wins. Granted, they were not against good teams, but Senior put emphasis on each starter having a winning record as well, with the Chicago Bears being a part of the NFC North, a division where each team has a winning record. He asks Marshall which rookie quarterback can take their team the furthest, and Marshall says it’s looking like Jayden Daniels, who has -230 odds to win the Offensive Rookie of The Year award at DraftKings Sportsbook.
Last week, Marshall says he was encouraging people to tap the breaks, a little safety tap, when it came to Daniels’ exceptions. This week, he was impressed with what he saw, sharing that Daniels is exceeding everyone’s expectations and that Washington and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is putting Daniels in positions to succeed.
Getting back to the group as a whole, what do all three of the rookie starting quarterbacks have in common? Marshall says they all play for good head coaches and have solid defenses supporting them.
GoJo takes a humorous approach to asking Newhouse who had it worse this past weekend: the Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce, who received an eight-year show-cause penalty for breaking recruiting violations during his tenure at Arizona State on top of the social media trade shenanigans taking place with Davante Adams or Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns, as the quarterback was sacked seven times against the Commanders. Newhouse playfully responded that in the dictionary, where it says, “if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying” there needs to be Antonio Pierce because they were doing whatever whenever and just wildin’ in every sense of the word as EIGHT years of show cause is INSANE.
However, on the field, he believes it is Watson and the Cleveland Browns, highlighting that their performance looked the worst it has been all year. As much scrutiny as Watson is getting, Newhouse is keen to point out that he’s worried about the other 52 players on the roster who are preparing every week. He says yes they’re professionals and getting paid, but they’re showing up every Sunday with the expectation that they don’t even have a CHANCE to win. And that’s a terrible place to be when you’re throwing your body around. The whole situation in Cleveland is souring worse and worse with the week.
